20 June Rugby match reports

Mr. Mark Ealey —

Competition starts: Won 10 Lost 2

2nd XV vs Christs College 2nd XV Won 28-19

In our first game of the competition we showed we had made good progress in the breakdown and were able to feed the ball out wide consistently with safe hands. The opening try 11 min into play was to Suliasi Faiva and converted by Matt Boyle. Minutes later a great run from Ollie Lyons set Will Sparrow up to crash through the final metre for the try, which went unconverted.

Christ’s responded at the 21 min mark with a converted try following an exchange of possession and territory which demonstrated they would capitilise on any errors. Just before the half Valentin Gomez scored off a set piece following a penalty to take us into the half time break, leading 17-7

The second half saw Christ’s close the gap by 12 points with two tries, one converted resulting in us trailing 17-19 With little time spent in the opposition half SBC pushed into the red zone and picked up a penalty. The 3 points returned our lead thanks to Matt’s precision.

In the final minutes of the game Amby Pulega scored out wide following another period of play involving multiple phases of trying to find the gap but retaining possession showing good technique in recycling the ball. Although unconverted Matt Boyle did prove his accuracy in the final stages of the game when he kicked a penalty from half way to add 3 to secure a win of 28 -19

Player of the day went to Ollie Lyons for his consistency in all phases of play.

Thanks to Lachie Williams for filming the game and for his fantastic support of this team whilst he is out injured.

Tries: Suliasi Faiva, Will Sparrow, Valentin Gomez, Amby Pulega

Conversions Matt Boyle 1, Penalties Matt Boyle

3rd XV vs CC 3rd XV Won 45-5

A game played under the new rules made some rapid adjustments to the team, adding in an early injury break for the opposition made it hard for the team to get into any rhythm early. A couple of quick tries lead to a little complacency and we battled to string a few phases together with poor handling and many wrong options taken. The team still showed promise and with ball in hand we were easily able to break their line.

As the team settled and got a little more time together the game became a lot more structured and we were able to break the line with ease. The second half continued in the same way and with more time on the park the team were able to extend the score line with ease.

Great games were had by Caleb Hazeldine and Tom Horton-Davey with Cory Hanrahan showing many deft touches on the wing.

U16A vs CC U16A: Won 78-0

As a team and family we would first like to pass on our condolences and prayers to Aaron (coach) and his family whose father past this week and also to the Anderson family who lost a loved one, they are a family that have contributed to the St Bede’s Rugby legacy over the years, God Bless.

The young Bede’s men went into this week against Christ’s College ,as a team we were looking to improve in small areas to keep continuing our journey this season .

We spent some time talking about simply skill sets and how they are the key building blocks to allow us to play rugby in a way we want to play . The players asked for coaching in certain parts of the game and we would like to thank Simon for coming down to assist with that . It is something that we will continue to do, so as players and coaches so we can all learn and become better at the game of rugby .

Defence has been the key to our game this season ,we spent time on Thursday on the whiteboard going over our pattern and what players responsibilities were and who they were marking, they implemented our defence pattern well and all players were working together and understanding their role , with that we kept our line un crossed again this week .

The team ending up with a convincing win 78-0 with all players again contributing to the score sheet in some way , the score was deserved this week but important to stay grounded and reset and continue to challenge ourselves to be better plays and people this week . Looking through other teams results well done to majority of teams(I think all but 2) coming away with the result and a special congrats from our team to the U16 B with a great turn around result to beat CBHS , great work Dave, Judah and team.

Thanks to all our supporters who enjoyed the game and even more the aroma in the team debrief at the end of the game , please feel free to be involved with the team on Facebook and after the game as we want to be an “Inclusive team not Exclusive’ . Congrats men and back to our school moto of ‘Fide et Opere’

U15B vs CBHS U15B lost 5-104

A tough and cold start to the season for the U15bs.Opposition tries came in regular succession soon after kick-off. The bigger clinical team of CBHS was persistent. An opportunity taken by the boys from a great positional kick followed by hustle at the line out, gave William Hughes his first try and the congratulations came flooding in. That was a high point. The boys left the field with bemused expressions. They maturely knew they'd had a pasting and could do better both individually and collectively. That is sport and the second chances it gives. Encouraging leadership words were heard. Many have been here before and know that team fortunes can change in 7 days with a couple of good midweek drills and reflection.

U63kgs Black vs StAC won 57-10

All of the boys played extremely well with with lots of tries being scored. Seth Matheson managed to score a hat-trick in the first half with electrifying pace on the wing, skinning the defenders on the edge. Joey Fitzgerald, Connor Crosbie and Logan Clark all caused havoc to the STAC defence with strong, elusive carries.  Cameron Howison’s accurate kicking on and off the tee added to the dominance we had on the field this week. Overall the boys played well and it was good to get a win in the first competition game.

U58kgs Red vs Burnside RFC won 71-12

St. Bede's followed up a good win at CBHS last week with another good performance running out 71-12 winners against Burnside today.

Our team started strongly scoring a great try after multiple phases within the first minute and carried on this form for the next hour scoring 11 tries and 8 conversions. The Bede's defensive line held strong for the most part but Burnside showed great character to come back at the end of the game to score two great tries which were fully deserved.

All players performed well and contributed to the Bede’s effort on the day however special mention needs to be made of Tyler Ikin for his tidy restart work, Max Kirk for his attacking variety and Flynn Martin (Player of the Match) for his all-round skills and exceptional work rate.
