Culture classes examine traditional art forms
Year 9 and 10 Cultural Studies provided an opportunity to explore the concepts of kōwhaiwhai and whakairo. This led the boys to do their own research into the deeper significance of these art forms. They looked at their traditional use and purpose as well as the imagery and symbolism that lay within.
The next step was to design their own pattern using the concepts they had learnt, first using pencil and paper, then stencil cut, and finally carving it into wood. Each individual created their own final product to take home and share with whānau.
Karakia were said before and after the work, there was full engagement throughout the process and all were proud of their achievements!
