New Ara Advantage scholarships are available, and applications are open now.

Ara is proud to offer a wide range of scholarships which can save learners thousands of dollars. Some recognise academic excellence, community leadership and sporting achievements. Others are designed to help meet skills shortages in specific industries or to simply encourage individuals into tertiary education.

Our brand new Ara Advantage scholarships are divided into four categories: Equity, excellence, leadership and Māori and Pacific. More information can be found here. Ara Advantage scholarships close on the 31 October, and the remainder of our scholarships have a wide range of closing dates.

These are cash scholarships that can be used alongside first year fees free for other study costs such as housing, childcare or required equipment.

If students meet the eligibility criteria, we encourage them to apply at the same time as applying for their programme of study.

The 8 skills almost all employers want to see in their staff

While some skills are industry-dependent, and there will always be exceptions to the rule, these skills are in high demand. While you are working on your specialist skills, don’t forget to work on these ones!

A positive and friendly attitude – including the ability to stay calm and cope when things aren’t easy

Working in a team – this means taking on jobs as needed, being easy to work alongside a friendly team member

Communication – including listening, writing and speaking clearly.

Managing yourself well – this means you are punctual, reliable and take good care of yourself as appropriate

Being willing to learn new things – and picking up new skills as required by the team

Initiative – this includes problem-solving and being able to think things through to figure out solutions, and making decisions well.

Being resilient – coping when things go wrong, remaining calm and non-defensive in the face of adversity

A sense of humour – things will go wrong, but being able to laugh about them and keep a positive outlook makes a huge difference
