21 May Rugby Match Reports
Well done to all of our teams playing despite low player numbers due to Covid etc.
1st XV vs Christ's College won 22-15
This game saw veteran forwards Suliasi Faiva and Andre Sula both being awarded the black tassle for playing 25 games for the 1st XV. There was another element of motivation for our boys in this game in that Christ’s knocked us out in last year’s semi-final match. The game between these two schools is always a structured and passionate affair with both teams being coached by people who know how 1st XV rugby works. There was some concern in our camp as several of our boys were not feeling 100% and others were out with injury. As is usual in this competition, the game was physical and intense. After battering away at each other, the half-time score was 10 all.
The second half saw some brave defence from our team. There were moments when they played sharp, decisive rugby and this resulted in them scoring two tries. The final score of 22-15 to St Bede’s was a fair reflection of the game.
Under the team’s MVP scoring system, Kalani Griffiths scored 1 point, Suliasi Faiva 2 points and Andre Sula 3 points. The newly instituted Origin awards committee of Mr Davidson and Mr Litten also agreed that Andre and Suliasi deserved to be inaugural recipients of this new honour which recognises outstanding contribution or feats during the game.
Half time score: 10-10 Fulltime 22-15 to SBC
Tries: Christian Ioane 2, Ben Trillo. Conversions: Ben Trillo 2. Penalties: Ben Trillo
2nd XV vs St. Thomas's College lost 18-19
In a twist of fate the team played St Thomas' 2nd XV for the second consecutive week. After a disappointing performance last week the team had a much more encouraging outing this time around. The game was tightly contested the entire way with several lead changes. Halftime saw St Thomas' up by just 4 points. The set piece battle was dominated by St Bedes, which was confirmed when the forwards achieved a pushover try from a lineout to take the lead. Though the team played well in the second half, using a breeze advantage to kick for territory and pressure the opposition lineout, the team failed to convert on a few prime opportunities late in the game which saw St Thomas' squeak out a very tight win. There's no doubt the team played much better this week and should continue to improve as players get more familiar with their roles, their responsibilities, and with each other.
3rd XV vs Christ's College 3rd XV won 47-17
Due to a scheduling quirk we played College for the second week running. Last week St Bede's won easily, but this week it was a much tougher game.
Noah Allison scored a good try after 3 minutes, however College scored soon after with a try that gave them a lot of self belief. St Bede's lacked intensity and accuracy and made numerous unforced errors. This allowed College to dominate possession and territory in the first half. Bede's led at the break by 14 to 12.
College scored first in the second half to take the lead. Then Finn Brook went over after a nice run by Matthew Mun and Bede's held a narrow lead for a while. During this time the Bede's forwards were starting to up their effort and intensity and they took control of the game. This provided the backs with plenty of possession and they regularly cut holes in the College defence. A further 4 tries were scored and St Bede's won by 47 to 17.

4th XV vs CBHS U18 "Blue" Lost 19-29
CBHS started strongly with their backline using the width well and they raced to a 19-0 lead. The Fourths fought back well and early in the second half had narrowed the gap to 19-12. Unfortunately after we scored we made a mistake a lot teams make and that was not securing the ensuing kick off.We gave away a penalty , they kicked to the corner drove over and scored. We then mucked up our kick off, scrum on half way, a couple of missed tackles and they were in again, 29-12. To the Fourths credit they came back scored and spent the last ten minutes on attack , going close but not quite getting over. Once again we showed improvement in our performance but must be clincal at certain times as we progress. Up front Hamish Rooney worked hard all day and Luke McBrydie was strong with the ball in hand. Hunter Hughes had a number of barn storming charges up the middle and put us on the front foot while Lorenzo Noa Siaosi secured plenty of ball at two in the lineout as well as making good ground with his runs around the fringes. James Florence cleared the ball very well from the base and showed his versatility into moving to hooker ( albeit with non-contested scrums) in the second half. Logan Hammond didn’t put a foot wrong out wide and Ben O’Kane and Lachie Baird bought cool heads and good organization in their stints in the second half.
( Tries: Luke McBrydie, Hamish Rooney, Ben O’Kane Conv; Taylor Fahey 2 )
U75kgs Red (the bye)
U75kgs Black vs StAC U75kgs won 35-21
A good game to watch, started strong out the gate, boys were good with running it up the guts but unfortunately the defence wasn’t as sharp as we had hoped. We had spent the last two weeks focusing on our tackling skills because of a bye which gave us extra time to train. But it didn’t seem to pay off in the end as we seemed to lack in our first up tackles. Otherwise our set piece were all good across the board and we were able to use our forward pack size to our advantage. We ended up winning the game 35-21 with good play all round from the boys. Player of the day was Josh Shaw, forward of the day was Joey Kilworth and Logan Rochford was back of the day.

U15 Blue vs Cashmere U15 12-62
U14 Davidson vs Shirley BHS U14 B won 61-0
On Saturday the boys took on Shirley U14B. Major improvements from last week as the score line showed this by gaining a 61-0 win. Some performances included 3 tries to Hunter Wieblitz, hard and dominant running in the forwards and a real sense of direction in the backs
U14 Dunne vs Te Aratai College U14 lost 17-35
This week U14 Dunne had their first home game vs Te Aratai College.
First half was played with good structure by the Bede's boys with ball retention at the ruck going well. With Te Aratai scoring three converted tries, credit to their first five who constructed some good back play and converted all three tries.Second half allowed Bede's to shift up a gear and tackling was much improved. Credit for some great tackling goes to Cooper Marsh. The team lineout functioned well and a secure ruck led to Bede's winning the second half with Ethan O'Donovan and Will O'Donnell scoring. With the team having a full injury and illness ward we would like to thank the young men from under 55's Bryn Fisher and Joe O'Kane that came to play for the match. Final score 17 - 35 to Te Aratai College.U14 Dunne Bedean week Fergus Daly for a great work rate throughout the entire game.
U14 Freeman vs CBHS U14B lost 21-69
Grading game vs CBHS U14B, saw our team lose 69-21. A promising start to the match with Rupeni Qoroya scoring a quick try one minute in, followed with a conversion by Rau Kumeroa.
Our defence slipped slightly in the first half, however after some motivation from the coach we were able to pick back up in the second. Toby Thwaites showed his skill and scored our final two tries followed by successful conversions by Rau Kumeroa.
Despite our best efforts, CBHS proved to be too strong for us on the day. With further training sessions and improved team cohesiveness, we will be bringing a stronger game next week.
