Senior Touch Team

David Litten —

Our senior Touch team was pleased with their performance in the Touch Canterbury Super Touch competition played after school on Wednesdays. They were the only unbeaten team over the course of this term. This led them into last weekend’s South Island Secondary Schools Championship with some degree of confidence. They played 3 pool games on Saturday. They beat Nelson College 9-4, King’s High School 8-7 and Shirley Boys’ 8-1.

This meant that they qualified at the top of their pool. On Sunday, the first game was a quarter-final against local rivals St Thomas College. Our team won 6-3. That put them into a semi-final against Otago Boys’ which they won 7-5.

The final was against King’s High School from Dunedin. While we had narrowly beaten them in Pool play, we knew they would be formidable. The final score of 5-6 to King’s was disappointing but the team was still pleased with making the final, something that we think no other St Bede’s team has achieved.

It was pleasing to note that during this tournament the team had beaten both of last years National Touch Championship finalists, Otago and King’s. The team is looking forward to this year’s National Secondary School Champs which will be held in Rotorua in December.
