Bachelor of Dental Technology; Otago University

Image by: Otago University

What is a Dental Technologist?

Dental technicians can be thought of as artists who, with a thorough understanding of dental materials science, use their artistic skills to fabricate the form, colour and function of individual teeth or maxillofacial prostheses for a patient.

Dental Technology is the technical side of dentistry where a dental technician, on prescription of a dentist, makes any prosthesis or appliance for the head and neck. This could consist of:

  • Artificial teeth such as complete dentures, partial dentures, crowns and bridges and implant supported dentures in various materials such as acrylics, alloys, and ceramics;
  • Removable orthodontic appliances consisting of springs and retainers in acrylic bases for the movement of teeth. Mouthguards to protect against sports injuries;
  • Maxillofacial appliances such as artificial eyes, ears, and facial prostheses that may be required after surgical treatment.

Here are the regulations to be accepted straight from secondary school;

To be considered for admission under the Secondary School category, an applicant should normally:

  1. have attained a minimum of 14 credits in each of two National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 approved subjects (or equivalent) from Science, Mathematics or Technology.
  2. have provided a statement of interest and a current curriculum vitae.

Selection of applicants who have met these criteria will be based on academic merit. Final admission is subject to the fulfilment of the University’s entrance requirements and confirmation of satisfactory NCEA Level 3 results (or equivalent).

Notes:
(i) Although not required, study of Biology to at least NCEA Level 2 would be an advantage.
(ii) Applicants who have not yet completed NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent) are initially considered on the basis of their NCEA Level 2 (or equivalent) performance in subjects taken for NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent). Applicants must have completed (or be completing) NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent) subjects within the last five years. Admission from Secondary School will be based on a scoring process similar to that used for Managed Enrolment.

Dual Degree vs Double Major

If you are tossing up between subjects to study at uni and considering a double major versus double or conjoint degree, you might like to read this new guide by Study Corgi. It can be helpful for students considering a dual degree or double major or just exploring majors and careers: https://studycorgi.com/blog/dual-degree-vs-double-major-whats-the-difference-are-they-worth-it/

Note: this is American, so some of the terminology and degree structures or regulations will be different to ours in NZ, but there is still lots of useful advice here.
