Digital Citizenship

Mr Jurgen Muller —

As a school we are becoming more and more concerned by what our young men are doing with their electronic devices. House Tutors and Senior Management are spending more and more time dealing with issues that stem from inappropriate use of their devices. To try and do something about this our year 9 and 10 students went through a short workshop on Digital Citizenship as part of their Social Studies course and we also have John Parsons (a New Zealand cyber safety expert) coming to talk to students, teachers and parents on Monday 25 June. As we roll out other initiatives throughout the year and for 2019 we thought we might include some information in the newsletter so you can also educate yourselves.

You might have heard of Snapchat – but do you know what it is?

Here is a link to an article about Snapchat: https://www.teensafe.com/blog/everything-a-parent-needs-to-know-about-snapchat/

Out of the article and to give a sense of the scale of use:

“Snapchat is the fastest growing social media app. surpassing even Instagram, which has been ranked as the number-one favorite app for teens:

There are an estimated 82 million users, with a majority of them between the age of 13 to 25 years old.

There are roughly 350 million posts or “snaps” sent daily.

Four out of every ten teens frequent Snapchat.

Snapchat has equalled Facebook for numbers of photos shared.”

Read the article and keep yourself informed.
