St Bede's College - Alert Level 3

Mr Jon McDowall —

A reminder for parents and whanau who are yet to let us know that their son will be attending next week. Due to the move to Alert Level 3 we will be open to receive Year 9 and 10 students from the 29 April for those students:

  • whose parents and whānau cannot provide supervision at home as they are required to work away from home at Alert Level 3
  • who cannot access learning from home, or
  • who may be considered vulnerable if they were to remain at home.

The key message for you is that if you can, you should keep your child at home. In order to ensure the safety of those children and our staff who do come to school, we will be operating with strict enforcement of health and safety measures. You should only physically send your child to school if you need to. If your child has a health condition that means they are at a greater risk of a severe illness, you must keep them at home. If your child is sick, please also ensure you keep them at home.

Given the challenges of operating a hybrid model of distance learning for some students and learning at school for others, we have decided that all students who will be attending school will continue with their distance learning programme. Key features of the learning at school programme are:

  • Students who attend school will be placed in a ‘learning hub’ of no more than eight students to assist with social distancing. Ideally these will be class based if numbers allow to promote discussion of learning, if not they will be House based.
  • Those who complete learning at school will not receive any direct teaching from their normal classroom teacher. They will continue with the material set on the existing learning from home platform.
  • ‘Learning Hubs’ will remain in the same classroom / block, and there will be strictly no mixing between hubs, or changing spaces or teachers each period. At this stage we plan to use spaces that are as comfortable as possible for students that also allow for each bubble to have separate bathroom facilities.
  • Ideally ‘Learning Hubs’ will be supervised over the week by teachers from a range of faculties to assist with any in class questions.
  • Daily ‘at school’ timetable will be revised to ensure the learning at school programme is enjoyable, flexible and as rewarding as possible for students who do need to be at school. Each day will include designated blocks for subject based distance learning, special character and physical activity.
  • Students will be able to wear mufti to allow for moderate low intensity exercise during the day.

More specific details will be sent to parents and whanau who confirm their son’s attendance. It is really important that we know who is coming and when, not only so we can plan, but also, so we can manage any safety issues should a student not arrive as expected.

If you are intending on sending your son to school please complete this survey link below, including selecting the days he will attend as soon as possible.
If your son will not be attending you do not need to complete this survey.
