13 June Rugby vs Christchurch BHS

Mr. Mark Ealey —

Pre-season "club-day"

2nd XV vs CBHS 3rd XV at SBC  lost 0-33
In our first and only pre-season run out we played a game of 3 x 20 minute thirds to trial tactics and position changes. Captained by Ben Higginbottom the opening third showed our players are fit and can defend, with neither team scoring in the first third.Following the resumption of play we showed some good skills in set pieces, but could not link these sufficiently in the field, to offer a consistent attack. The players though show promise, and with more training under their belt, will enter the competition as a capable team which will get results.

U16 "Red" vs CBHS U16 "A'  won 41-0

The men today had their first hit out against a strong CBHS side. We didn’t have an over complicated approach to the game, as a team it put a mark on the board as to where we are and where we want to get to. The team had come together well over the last couple of weeks , having three good training runs together which has given us plenty of time to prepare for the first match . Our plan was simple in the early stages of the season and that is to allow the players to express themselves and do what they are good at rather than as coaches telling them what to do and play with too much structure. Aaron Persico, our co-coach, said it well by getting them to think ’ run – hit – run’. This gave us momentum and a simple direction that we wanted to go in straight not sideways).

It was a good win by 41-0, with a pleasing and positive ‘zero’ in the points against column, due to the men’s pride in the goal line defence. This is something we can’t coach and was rewarding for supporters, management and players as it showed a great attitude, which is a small thing that makes a big difference .

So well done men, great first game by all, that has set a standard we want to continue to play at. The team would also like to thank all the supporters on the side line.
