Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori in the Arts

Ashleigh Mowbray —

Over on the St Bede's Arts Faculty Facebook Page we have been celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori by sharing waiata, toi and helpful hints, like how to order your morning kawhe in Te Reo. There are so many ways you could be involved!

You could Kupu your ingoa in te reo Māori (speak your name in te reo):

https://myname.kupu.co.nz/

Or listen to a waiata. We've been listening to Kia iwa Rā, a translation of Nessun Dorma (Italian) into te reo Māori. It's waiwaiā (beautiful).

There has also been some incredible toi (art) shared.

A little earlier this term (during lockdown) some of our Year 9 Art students received a challenge - to create an outdoor sculpture piece using natural materials.

Influenced by the upcoming Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Jamie Warren (with help from his Dad, Ian) created this Taniwha. Using an old piece of Cherry Wood from a tree on his farm out in Ashley, North Canterbury, Jamie spent 6 hours over 2 days putting in the hard mahi carving. The Taniwha now lives in his Dad's office.

You can see the result of Jamie's lockdown mahi in the photo. Tino pai, Jamie!
