Vasco Fragoso Mendes & Francisco Vieira de Almeida

1. How old were you when you started playing rugby and what is your earliest rugby memory?

Vasco: Started playing rugby when I was 5 years old, due to family tradition. My earliest memory on the rugby field would have to be around 1999, when I was 6 and left the game crying and went to my dad. I don't know why, but that's the one thing I remember.

Kiko: I have started playing rugby at the age of 6. At the time, my older brother had already started playing and I decided to give it a try. My earliest rugby memory would have to be my first tournament, which took place in early 1999.

ラグビーを始めたのは何歳でしたか？一番最初のラグビーの思い出はなんですか？

Vasco: 「家族の決まりで、５歳の時に始めました。一番最初の思い出は６歳、９９年ぐらいで、泣いてグランドから父親の立っているところに逃げて行ったことです。どうしてこうなったか覚えていないけど、それが最初の思い出です。」

Kiko: 「6歳でラグビーを始めました。兄がすでにプレーをしていたので、自分もやってみようと思いました。最初のラグビーの思い出は１９９９年、最初の大会に出たことです。」

2. What was it like playing in the St. Bede’s College 1st XV in 2011?

Vasco: A dream come true! I never imagined I would play rugby in NZ and to have the opportunity to play for one of the best schools in the country is something I'll treasure forever. The support from all the College, the playing ground, coaches, trainings, the haka.. Things I will never forget.

Kiko: The opportunity to play in the St. Bede’s College 1st XV greatly exceeded my expectations. I never thought I would have the chance to be part of one of the most recognised rugby schools in New Zealand and to play alongside so many great players, coaches, managers and supporters. Doing the haka, beating CBHS, winning the Press Cup and playing the Top 4 were all very special moments.

Vasco: 「夢が叶ったようでした。ニュージーランドの名門校でプレーができるとは思ってもいなかったです。この経験は自分にとって一生の宝物です。セント・ビーヅからのサポート、グランドの素晴らしいこと、練習の面白いこと、ハカなどが全部忘れられないことです。」

Kiko: 「１軍でプレーできたことは期待していたことをはるかに超えた経験でした。ニュージーランドの名門校で素晴らしい選手、コーチ、マネジャーとフアンと一緒にラグビーを楽しませてもらったことは一生の思い出です。ハカをやったり、クライストチャーチボイズハイに勝ったり、リーグで優勝したり、上位４チームからなる全国大会に出場できたことは自分の宝物です。」

3. What stands out as memories from your time living and studying at St. Bede’s College?

Vasco: Getting to know Kiko is one of the best. We weren't very close beforehand, but after those 8 months, I can say I have a mate for life. Also, Will Jennings and his family will always have a place in my heart. School-wise, I really enjoyed being engaged in a different school system. The way the teachers interacted with us was very new to me. Living-wise, the Boarding House and the boys were fantastic, despite it being a tough year to be in Christchurch, after the 22nd of February earthquake.

Kiko: I have so many good memories from the time I spent at St. Bede’s College, especially the people I got to meet. I was not the biggest fan of Vasco (he played at a rival club in Portugal) and after the time I spent in Christchurch, I can now say that I have a very good friend for life. Also, I will always remember the warm welcome we were given by Will Jennings and his family (Jenny, Tony and George) after the 22nd of February earthquake. Overall, it was a great experience – I got to learn a different culture, I took part in English, Japanese and History classes and, most of all, I improved a lot as a rugby player.

セント・ビーヅにいた時の思い出を教えてください。

Vasco: 「キコと親友になったことは大きいですね。ニュージーランドに渡航するまではそれほど親しくなかったですが、あの留学経験の後、一生の友達になりました。とてもよくしてくれたWill Jenningsと彼の家族のことも大事な思い出です。学校に関しては、自分の国と違う教育制度で勉強することがとても楽しかったです。先生方の生徒に対する接し方も新鮮でいい刺激でした。生活面では、地震が起きた年で色々と難しい部分もありましたが、一緒に寮にいた学生たちが本当によく受け入れてくれました。」

Kiko: 「セント・ビーヅにいた時のいい思い出がたくさんあります。特にいろいろな素敵な方に出会えたことは良かったです。留学をする前にライバルのクラブでプレーをしていたヴァシュコとそれほど仲よかったわけではないですが、その留学の経験のおかげで一生の仲間になったのです。２月22日の大きな地震直後にサポートをしてくれたジェニングズ家の方々の手厚い持て成しもいまだによく覚えています。すごくいい経験でした。異文化に触れ、英語、日本語と歴史の授業にも出て、ラグビーの選手としてだいぶ成長しました。

4. What was the experience in the International Rugby Programme like for you developing as a young person?

Vasco: It helped me see things from a different perspective. I had the chance to meet people from all sorts of backgrounds and connect with them. Some did not speak English, but in the end, we became close friends. Those sort of things make me feel proud of being a part of the IRP.

Kiko: The IRP is a once in a lifetime experience that had a very positive impact in my development as a young person. The possibility to be part of an international environment, learn new cultures and meet people from different backgrounds shaped my character as a young man.

若者の成長という点で考えれば、ラグビー留学プログラムでの経験はどうでしたか？

Vasco: 「世界を違う観点から見れるようになりました。色々な国・背景からの人に会って、つながりを感じることができました。英語の話せない学生もいましたが、それにも関わらず、結局いい友達になりました。このようなことを考えると自分がラグビー留学プログラムに参加したことを誇りに思っています。」

Kiko: 「IRPは人生に一度しかできない経験で、自分の青年としての成長にとてもいい影響をもたらしました。国際的な環境の中で異文化に触れ、自分と違うバックグラウンドの人に会えたことは青年になる上での人格形成によかったと思います。」

5. What are your highlights from your rugby after returning to Portugal?

Vasco: A lot of good things happened for me after 2011, all of which can be credited back to our stay in New Zealand. Playing in the U20 Junior World Trophy, playing in more than 30 7s Tournaments for Portugal and getting 15 caps for the National XVs team is something to treasure. I actually had another year abroad, in Australia in 2015. Playing Shute Shield level rugby alongside some of the current Waratahs is also a career highlight for me.

Kiko: I frequently say that the IRP has defined my career as a rugby player (in a very positive way). I had the opportunity to improve a lot as a rugby player and, a few months after getting back to Portugal, I was named for the Portuguese squad that participated in the 7’s World Series. After that I took part in the 7’s World Cup and got my first cap with the XV’s.

Vasco: 「2011年にニュージーランドでプレーをしたおかげで色々ないいことが起きました。国の代表としてU20の世界大会に出れたこと、7人制のワールドサーキットで30回以上の大会に出れたこと、15人制でキャップを15本取れたことは自分の宝物です。実は2015年にオーストラリアでまたワンシーズン、シュートシールドレベルでプレーをしました。そこでその後、ワラターズでプロ選手になった人と一緒にプレーをしたのもいい思い出です。」

Kiko: 「IRPに参加したおかげで自分のラグビーキャリアが成り立ったと思います。留学をしている間に選手としてだいぶ成長をして、帰国してから間もなくポルトガルの７人制の代表チームに選ばれて、世界サーキットに出場しました。その後、１５人制の初キャップも取りました。」

6. What do you see rugby offering to young people?

Vasco: From the parents point of view - education and discipline. For the young people themselves - fun, friends, the values of sportsmanship, and memories.

Kiko: I believe that rugby is the most complete sport that one can ever play. The team spirit, respect and other values of rugby are important assets that you will carry for the rest of your life and that will turn out to be very useful for your life outside rugby. Finally, I would like to thank Mark Ealey, Murray Henderson and everyone at St. Bede’s College for the opportunity they have given me.

ラグビーをすることによって若者は何を得ると思いますか？

Vasco: 「親の観点からすれば、社会勉強と規律だと思います。プレーヤーたちにとって、楽しさ、友人関係、スポーツマンシップの価値観といい思い出です。」

Kiko: 「ラグビーは人間にとっての一番人生に近いスポーツだと思います。チームの結束・団結意識・尊重などのラグビーのコアバリューは、自分のラグビー以外の人生でとても役に立つと思います。最後にラグビー留学経験のサポートなどをしてくれたマーク・イーリ氏、マレー・ヘンダーソン氏をはじめ、セント・ビーヅの方々に素晴らしい経験を与えてくれたことにお礼を申し上げたいと思います。」
