Kelvin Fisher —

Last Saturday saw all 7 St Bede’s teams play on home turf at our gym in a Club Day which also featured the opportunity to showcase our sponsors and raise some funds with sausage sizzle.

Wish to acknowledge the support from Naylor Love, Clark Equipment, Plumbing HQ, Physio South Northwood, Hughes Irrigation and ASB Bank – your contributions are immense to the club and we thank you for your assistance and support.

Great to hear numerous parents and wider family supporting the boys and we hope to be able to repeat this day later during the season.

Huge thanks to all those involved with setting up and organising the day, your involvement is extremely appreciated and helps our great little club tick.

On Tuesday night the Senior team headed out to the cauldron of Mega Sports Centre to take on Rangiora High in a bid to get their Thomson Trophy on track after an opening loss.

The team struggled in the opening minutes to find the bottom of the hoop however at the defensive end were troubling the home team and managed to stay in touch on the scoreboard.

Going into the first quarter break, Bede’s trailed by 5 points but the 2nd quarter was to prove crucial to St Bede’s as they convincingly outscored the hosts 27-8 to lead at the break 43-29.

Some foul trouble across key players had an impact across the second half with Bede’s unable to sustain the efforts of the 2nd quarter and allowing a resurgent Rangiora team back into the game. A tense final few minutes saw the score locked at 75 all at the final hooter, sending the match into overtime.

A composed and controlled overtime period from Bede’s saw them dominate the scoreboard 13-3 and take the game 88-78.

James Leen (25 pts, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals) and Ashton Walls (22 pts, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) led from the front for Bede's with a strong contribution from Griff Westwood (10 pts, 9 rebounds) and Lochie McLean injecting impetus from the bench with 8 pts, 7 rebounds and 6 steals.

Next Wednesday sees the first home Thomson Trophy game of the season with the team taking on St Andrew’s at 7pm. Would be awesome to pack the gym and give the lads some raucous support.
