Hard work pays off for Potts
Year 11 student Jayden Potts has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Under 18 Men's Softball World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico, in November.
This remarkable achievement is the culmination of Jayden's hard work, dedication, and perseverance in the sport of softball.
The journey towards this incredible opportunity began back in June 2021 when Jayden was first named in the New Zealand U18 Junior Black Sox wider 24-man squad. Over the next two years, the squad faced the challenge of proving their skills and determination to secure a spot among the final 16 players for the upcoming World Cup. It has been a rigorous and demanding process, but an experience that has undoubtedly shaped their growth as elite athletes.
Jayden's versatility on the field is truly impressive. While he can play anywhere in the infield, his primary position is catcher. His skills, coupled with his commitment to the sport, have earned him recognition and numerous accolades. In January 2022, Jayden represented his club PCU, and together they emerged as champions in the South Island U15 tournament. Jayden received the Top Pitcher and MVP trophies - a testament to his outstanding performance.
In February 2022, the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) extended the age eligibility for the U18 World Series to include Under 19s, widening the pool of talented players. Jayden's dedication and talent were acknowledged when he was named in the wider 32-man training squad in April 2022.
In January 2023 Jayden represented Canterbury in the National U19 tournament. Not only did Canterbury emerge victorious in the tournament, but Jayden's performance throughout earned him joint MVP honours alongside his pitcher.
In February 2023, Jayden achieved another milestone in his softball career as he made his debut for the Canterbury Red Sox Men's team. Competing in the South Island Jefferies Cup, Canterbury emerged victorious once again, and Jayden played an integral role in their triumph.
After months of relentless hard work, unwavering dedication, and rigorous training, Jayden's efforts have paid off. He has been rewarded with a place among the final 16 players who will represent New Zealand at the Under 18 Men's Softball World Cup.
Congratulations to Jayden and all the athletes who have been selected for this opportunity. We wish Jayden the best of luck as he represents New Zealand on the international stage in Hermosillo, Mexico.
