Weekly Sports Update

This week's edition includes news from the rowing, athletics, hockey, cricket, basketball and football codes.

Rowing

37 rowers headed to Twizel to compete in the South Island Secondary School Championships.

The rowers were entered into 25 races and they made 19 Finals, of which 11 were A finals and 8 were B finals.  

  • The Under 15 4+ made up of Ben Visser, Will O’Brien, Ben MacGregor, Ben Fleming and Caleb Parsons as the coxswain won Sliver.
  • Under 15 8+ made up of Lewis Meates, Ben Visser, Ben MacGregor, Will O’Brien, Sam Reed, Jamie Soper, Thomas Arscott, Ben Fleming and Caleb Parson won bronze.
  • Novice 8+ made up of Harry Wilson, Cory Cormack, Oscar Landridge, Sam Mulholland, Maty Barr, Ben Nicholson, Jonty Robertson, and David Glen with Rhys Balchin the coxswain won bronze.

Congratulations to them all on a great season.

Now 25 boys have two weeks to train hard for Maadi Cup, which is in Karapiro this year.  We wish them all the Best.


Athletics

Canterbury Secondary School Champs were cancelled on Saturday and now they are working towards entry to South Island Champs which will be held in Dunedin on April 1 and 2.

Cricket

St Bede’s College Cricket Australia Tour 2017 are fundraising by selling the lovely Heller’s Bacon, Middle bacon 400g: 1pack for $8.00 or 3 packs for $20.00.   If you would like to order some please mail me their order pdwalkers@xtra.co.nz or phone  021332800.

Hockey

“Have a go Day” and registration day will be held this Monday, 20 March at Marist Turf at 3.00pm  – this is for all hockey players and anyone wishing to give hockey a go.  This will be run by our experienced team of coaches for this year.  The hockey club looks forward to welcoming new and returning players – no previous hockey experience is necessary!!!

An information sheet outlining the season including trial dates. season start and tournament dates will be given out on the day.  If students are involved in summer sport then they must continue to attend practices as summer sport take priority but please put your name down in the Sports Office or email Mrs Kissick: sport@stbedes.school.nz.

Parents are welcome to attend the “Have a Go Day” and also welcome to attend the monthly meeting which will be held this Monday in the College staffroom at 7.30pm.

Basketball

The St Bede's College Basketball Club are very exciting as the new shooting gun has arrived from America, this will see the boys having specialist shooting sessions and this will improve their shooting skills and we should see some good results out there on the court this season.  All the fundraising paid off last year allowing the club to purchase such an outstanding piece of equipment.

The Club is holding their monthly meeting this Tuesday night in the staffroom at 6.30pm and all parents are welcome to attend.

Football

Trials Under 17 trials will be held this Sunday from 12.30 to 2.00pm.
