Kelvin Fisher —

The second round of the Thomson Trophy saw St Bede's venture to Christchurch Boys' High anticipating a tough clash.

From the tip off Boys' High brought energy and passion jumping out to an early 10-point lead before Bede's settled into their rhythm. The defence from the home team restricted the opportunities in the keyhole and St Bede's struggled to hit perimeter shots with consistency

The early part of the second half saw Bede's pressure the opposition ballhandlers with success, creating numerous turnovers and converting into layups. Moving out to a 10 point margin during this period meant St Bede's headed into the final stanza with the momentum.

Boys' High continued to hang around, at times eroding the lead, however some aggressive drives to the hoop proved fruitful and St Bede's clinched victory 95-88.

The side continue their campaign with another away game next week vs Shirley Boys'. Game is set down for Tuesday 24 May with 7.20pm tip off and the team would relish your support.

Match Reports 14 May

U17 Red

The U17 Red played against Gators Red at St Bede's gym. It was a slow start for both teams with no points scored until the second minute when the U17 Red boys scored 8 points in quick succession with no response from the Gators team.

The opposition regrouped after time out was called with the first quarter ending 19/8 to St Bede's.

The second quarter was at times messy with the U17 Red’s coach calling time out and asking the boys for more intensity and hunger. At halftime, St Bede's was leading by 35/27.

The boys brought some more intensity during the third and fourth quarter with a total of 50 points scored and finishing the game with a win. Final score was 85/55.

U17 Black

The St Bede's U17 black basketball team played Shirley Spartans B at ARA on Saturday. The game started off very slowly with both teams not taking advantage of the early season turnovers from either team. Shirley ended the first quarter with a slender 3-point lead. Shirley managed to edge ahead during the second quarter by outscoring St Bede's by 17 points to 8. This saw Spartans head into the longer break with a 12-point lead. First half highlights included Max MacLeod and Peter Gamble scoring 6 points and 3 points respectively.

In the second half, St Bede's started to play a more cohesive game and hold Shirley to their 12-point lead at the end of the third quarter but unfortunately a strong team performance from St Bede's in the final quarter could not claw back into the game. Spartans ended up taking the game with a final sore of 59 to 40. The valuable lesson for this game is that if you start off slow and leave your best Basketball to the final quarter, it will be hard to consistently win games.

U17 White

SBC U17 White played a strong Papanui Team with a long bench - Papanui took the win 87/51 - lots of great plays by the lads & thanks to Will & Taylor for their support coaching this week

U15 Red

Played a strong St Thomas team with their own injuries again they brought lots of heart but took a loss to St Thomas 77/53

U15 Black

A great battle against Middleton Grange Gators, had a hard fought game which they led right up to the final few minutes when Gators drew it on the full time whistle 62 all.

The boys found some extra energy and pulled off the win in overtime 75-69. Nikau and Lee led the charge on the scoreboard, Max was a force to be reckoned with his on ball defence while Ryan rebounded like a champion. Great work boys
