Most of our teams play their last games in the Canterbury Basketball competition this weekend. Good luck to the U17 Black side who face Selwyn Hawks in their semi-final. The team would appreciate your support down at ARA at 12.10pm.

The U20 & 17A sides conclude their Championship Round Robin tomorrow with the 17s already locked in for a spot in the final on Saturday 21 August.

Next week sees 3 of our teams take on Marlborough Boys’ College in the annual exchange with 2 junior teams taking on their opponents on Monday afternoon with games at 4pm and 5.15pm. The senior side face Marlborough at 11am on Tuesday morning.

The Senior side entered the knockout stage of the Thomson Trophy last night, taking on Christchurch Boys’ High at Cowles Stadium, with the loser shutting the door on their Thomson Trophy aspirations.

Bede's started strongly jumping out to 19-9 lead after 5 minutes, forcing Boys’ High to call a timeout. Despite this, Bede's continued its impressive opening quarter and increased the margin to 13 points before Boys’ High eroded this to a small degree and Bede's led 33-24 at quarter time.

A burst from the opposition saw them reduce the lead to 2 points early in the 2nd period. Both sides struggled to seize any domination as the game headed towards halftime with Bede's only scoring 7 points in the final 4 minutes of the half and went to the break 53-47 ahead.

Boys’ High dominated the 3rd quarter, finding some gaps within the Bede's defence and snatched the lead after 4 minutes of the period and maintained the advantage at the break 77-75.

With their season on the line, Bede's lifted and drew level 91-91 with 4.48 left on the clock and a tense finish looked imminent.

Having learnt valuable lessons from recent games when able to close out successfully, St Bede's executed exceptionally well outscoring Boys’ High 11-3 in the closing minutes to secure a well-deserved victory, 102-94.

The elation of the players, management and supporters was obvious, with this win being one of the highlight performances to date this season.

Ashton Walls led the way with 36 points, scoring in the paint and beyond the arc. Harvey O'Neill compiled an impressive 23 points whilst Harrison Earl chipped in 12 points despite being in foul trouble for part of the match. The battle for the boards was intense and several Bede's players featured strongly in this aspect with Walls and Earl topping the count with 9 rebounds, and Griffyn Westwood securing 7 rebounds.

Next Tuesday sees St Bede's take on St Thomas for a semi-final berth and having recently gone down in overtime to STC, will be seeking to reverse this result. The fixture is set down for St Thomas and we would love to fill the stadium with a sea of red and black.

Our senior and junior tournament teams are on a fundraising drive ahead of their South Island tournaments in a few weeks.
