Year 9s learn about staying safe online

Diarmuid McMahon —

Earlier this term, Year 9 students completed a workshop on online safety.

The main theme of the technology presentation was a strengths-based approach to using technology well. The boys discussed:

  • The importance of quality connections.
  • The Digital Communications Act – how this is in place to protect them.
  • AI – the strengths of AI and what to watch out for.
  • Online Bullying – what it looks like, support and what happens if I make a mistake.
  • Nudes – The Bare Facts about consent and sharing.
  • Online Scams – what are they, how to protect yourself and who you can connect with.
  • Support – both internally and externally, including our Centre of Wellbeing and Netsafe NZ.

This workshop reinforced the great work and conversations that students have and continue to have in Mana Tāne with their peers and kaiako. All year groups will continue to discuss aspects of social media and online safety throughout the year.

Mana Tāne is the perfect place for these conversations to take place as it is a safe space where groups are small and well-connected to each other.
