NZTA —

Winters Road Subway Opening

he Christchurch Northern Corridor (CNC) Alliance team is opening the Winters Road Subway to the public. From Monday 2 July pedestrians and cyclists will use the new subway to divert from the QEII Drive shared path at Grimseys Road and Winters Road.

Work on the subway started in February 2017. Before the physical structure could be built the ground needed to be improved. 662 piles were driven to create a solid foundation. The subway walls were precast off-site and the floor and the roof were poured onsite. 135 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 500 cubic metres of concrete was poured. Finishing touches will complete the work on this major  structure later this year. The new motorway, once open, will pass over the subway.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

To construct the QEII Drive interchange we need to divert pedestrians and cyclists on the QEII Drive shared path to a new route that uses the new Winters Road Subway. Please use Winters Road and Grimseys Road as a diversion. See map overleaf.

MORE ABOUT STRUCTURES

During the project construction time we are building 11 bridges, 13 culverts, upgrading two subways and building two new ones. For more information on our structures, watch our feature video on our project website: www.nzta.govt.nz/cnc
