Four-medal haul for Maadi rowers

Kerry Sullivan —

With the completion of the Maadi Cup Regatta in Summer Tournament Week, the 2024/25 rowing season has officially concluded.

With great weather for regattas this season, we had a fantastic build up and were able to assess ourselves fully against our opposition competing at Lake Ruataniwha in the lead up to The Maadi Cup Regatta at Lake Karapiro.

The strength of the North Island Crews was pretty much as we had expected. The standout had to be the U18 crew from Westlake Boys, a fact backed up by their wins in the U18 Pair, Four and Eight, and picking up 15 Regatta points and ninth equal overall.

Our four-medal haul comprised two golds, a silver and a bronze, finishing with 14 points and and finishing 11th equal for Regatta Points. With good results in the U18 Eight +, 2nd; U16 Eight +, 1st and U16 Four +, 1st we showed we have depth to our programme and the next couple of years look good. With a track record in the last three seasons of a first and two seconds in the Maadi Cup final, we will look to add to our success next season. Full results for the finals and crews are listed below.

Following their success at Maadi, three rowers - Alex Cowan, Alex Walters and Carter Connolly - have been selected to trial for the U18 South Island squad to compete at the 2025 North Island vs South Island Regatta at Lake Karapiro.

For our Year 13 rowers who complete their time as rowers for St Bede’s - Ashton Corcoran, Alex Cowan, Bruno Dooley, Christopher Guiney, Jake O’Sullivan, Quinn O’Sullivan, Henry Robertson, and Hugo van Herel - we thank them for their contribution to St Bede’s rowing and encourage them to maintain an interest in the sport, given their progress and the contribution they have made.

In the next few weeks, we look forward to celebrating the success of the season with all of our dedicated crew, supporters and sponsors that have made this season possible.

For the rowers heading to Twizel to trial for the South Island U18 squad, we wish you well in your pursuit of making the squad to compete against North Island crews in Karapiro.
