Rowing Titles and Open Day

Kerry Sullivan —

SBC Students part of Securing U18 National Titles and Menzies Cup

Following the Maadi Cup, Performance Rowing New Zealand held two selection camps for U18 rowers, to select crews that would compete head to head in the North versus South Island U18 Regatta.

Six students from St Bede’s attended the trials in Twizel, Jack Dennehy-Coles, Sam Earl, Matthew Glen, Josh Hamer, Luke Hickling and Sam Woodgate. Notably, four were selected with Sam Earl and Josh Hamer missing out this year.

The trials and competition were designed to allow young rowers to experience performance rowing, tour the High Performance facilities and allow national selectors a chance to observe them in action in all aspects of their preparation for competitive rowing.

The South Island Rowers took out the Regatta overall with wins in both the boys and girls eights. All four SBC rowers were in the winning eight posting a time of 6:01.32 Jack Dennehy-Coles and Sam Woodgate competed in the U18 Coxed four, coming second to the North Island crew by 2.7 sec in 6:43.71 Matthew Glen and Luke Hickling won the U18 coxless pair oars, in 07:06.47

The Regatta title was awarded on points with the title going to the South Island 75 to 65 and securing the Menzies Challenge Cup.
