1st XV vs Christchurch BHS

Mr Mark Ealey —

The setting for the semi-final was a perfect backdrop for this tightly contested match with a ground surrounded by enthusiastic supporters and two teams who were well-coached and prepared.

As with the first meeting earlier in the season CBHS started well and quickly established a 14 – 3 lead.

What followed was some of the best rugby played all season by St Bede’s. They gained the lead before half time with four very well constructed tries, each combining team work with a touch of individual brilliance. Eto Bainivalu delighted the crowd with two tries, Kynan Stowers-Smith broke numerous tackles to score, and Flynt Preston showed great skill in stretching the Boys' High defence to score in the corner.

However Boys' High countered every St Bede’s try with tries of their own. In the end they scored six converted tries all coming from their very effective pick and go and their relentless efforts at the breakdown. Again the St Bede’s front row showed why they are the best in the competition, but equally impressive was the Boys' High defence and their ability to absorb pressure. Despite a late try to Connor O’Neill, St Bede’s season was finally over with a 42-32 defeat.

The team can, however, look back on an outstanding 16-3 season with seven trophies collected and being unbeaten in their traditionals. Well done to the team and their management.
