Careers Corner - News and Updates

Mrs Jan Kershaw —

This week the Year 13 Students were lucky enough to have a talk with a serving American Marine, who is an Old Boy of the College.

Sergeant Major Carey Wells presented a wonderful Career provoking speech on Career Pathways for our Year 13 Students on the ‘My Future Self Day’. This is kindly sponsored by the Old Boys' Association and is greatly appreciated by the students as it gives them a real-world context, for life outside of school.

Sergeant Major Wells left St Bede’s College in 1989 to take up a school exchange in America, where he won a scholarship to go to University. After earning his Bachelor of Science Degree, he followed his passion and trained in the Marine Corps, where he has been deployed in active duty in many of the world’s most recent conflicts. The Meritorious Service Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation and Achievement Medals are only some of the commendations he has received throughout his successful career.

Sergeant Major Carey Wells - Careers Talk

The second part of the day was run by the wonderful women at Zestpeople. Michelle, Jude and Jo instructed the boys on interviewing tips, networking and CV writing. Zestpeople were able to assist the boys in understanding more about themselves, and what drives them as individuals, in order to make the best Career choices.

The last part of the Careers Day saw 24 guests arrive from a variety of different professions. This was run as a Careers Speed Dating Event where the students had 5 x 10 minute slots to meet these professionals and talk to them about their job, training and future focus.

It was a fabulous and informative day.

A very big thank you to all those people who took time out of their busy day, to contribute to the event.

If you are interested in coming to St Bede’s College to speak to the students about your career, then please get in touch with me.
