Juniors unite in prayer with mini rosary

Rachel Pitcaithly —

Year 9 and 10 students received a set of rosary beads and prayed a mini rosary.

During Māna Tane time in Term 2, Years 9 and 10 gathered to receive their own set of rosary beads. This was a very special time with each boy receiving his beads from his Mana Tāne kaiako, who also kept a set.

The Rosary is both one of the oldest and most popular prayers in the Catholic tradition. It is a meditative prayer where we repeat a cycle of prayers that focus on significant events in the life of Jesus Christ. There are four mysteries of the Rosary, the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and the Luminous. Each mystery consists of one Our Father, 10 Hail Mary's and one Glory Be.

To introduce the boys to the Rosary, we prayed a ‘mini rosary’ as we followed the events of the Joyful Mysteries:

  • The Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary.
  • The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth.
  • The Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem of Judea.
  • The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple.
  • The Finding of Jesus in the Temple.

We prayed one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Glory Be for each of the Joyful Mysteries. The boys were encouraged to keep their rosary beads in their blazer pocket or beside their beds and to share them with their families.
