First Capping Ceremony for St Bede’s Water Polo Club

Mr. Mark Ealey —

Momentum grows

Due to the success of the St Bede’s boys in the pool, the fantastic culture and the ever-growing player numbers a meeting was called in early 2020 to assess if there was parent support to set up a water polo club at St Bede’s. At the first meeting there were 35 parents present and the St Bede’s Water Polo Club was officially established. The senior team were South Island Champions in 2019, but could not defend their title as Covid prevented the senior competition taking place in Term 1, 2020. However, our year 9/10 boys won the South Island Championship in Term 4 and so we embark on 2021 looking to continue that success. We had 51 players sign up for water polo in Term 1, 2021 and have entered 4 teams into the senior competition.

It was with great pride that the club was able to award caps to seven senior players this year. There was an award to three Old Boys who did not receive their caps in 2020 due to a Covid related delay with the caps and four current players. The players are

Sam O’Neill, Pat O’Neill, George Methven, Sam Rochford, Will Jamieson, Caleb Stewart, Jared Talanoa.
