Greetings from St Bedes,

Justin Boyle —

Entrance Day for the new cohort coming in next year finished the week, a day when the new boys took steps towards beginning their journey in the College. The boys were naturally a bit nervous, some parents more so!!

During the week, the Marist Youth Ministry team ran a social justice programme for Year 12 students. It was a challenging day for some of the boys to be confronted with seeing things from a socially just point of view or doing what is right for people. In the Catholic tradition there is another set of guidelines to seeking out the objective truth about issues, namely the call of Jesus, which is found in the Gospels, the record of what Jesus did, the stories he told, the relationships he built and the plans he left in place for all those who followed him. In the context of a Catholic College such as ours, these also influence our thinking about social justice issues. The boys were presented with various examples of inequality both in NZ and overseas which significantly challenged their thinking.

The Cultural arm of the College was in the spotlight this week as well, with a most successful Variety Concert, which featured some making their ‘debuts’ at this event, and some old stagers who have been a regular feature!!

Two Year 10 boys, who performed at the Variety Concert, also entertained the parents of the new boys at a social event last night. Congratulations to Kade Burroughs and Conor Campbell-Scott, who provided the background music for the large crowd.

Until next week
