Following the disappointment of their respective South Island tournaments being cancelled, both the Senior and Junior teams were able to get some end of season basketball action during the first weekend of the holidays.
The junior team participated in an invitational tournament with 5 games over 2 ½ days against sides from Christchurch and Nelson. With limited preparation and no games for 5 weeks there were obvious signs of rustiness however, these were quickly overcome, and all players contributed well across all games.
At the conclusion of the weekend the team had 3 wins and 2 losses, with a narrow win over Nayland in the final game to finish 6th.
Vs Invitational Team 63 - 41
Vs Hillmorton 67 - 43
Vs Shirley Boys High 56 - 65
Vs St Thomas 37 - 60
Vs Nayland 72 - 68
Thanks to team staff Tom Hughes, Caleb Conyers, Jane Cutbush and the supporters/scorebench personnel who helped to provide the boys with the opportunity to finish the season with some games. Not only has their guidance and assistance been to the forefront during the recent tournament but during the entire season and the boys have reaped the benefit of this hard work and application from Tom, Caleb and Jane.
Embarking on a Southern tour, the senior side played 5 games over 3 days and took on sides which they have not played for several years so presented an ideal opportunity to benchmark themselves outside of the Canterbury competition and also to develop a stronger bond and culture across the team.
The tour started in Ashburton with a comfortable victory over Ashburton College with all players getting extended minutes in an impressive opening match given the lack of recent matches.
Immediately on the road following this game with the next stop being Oamaru and a clash with Otago Secondary School champions, Waitaki Boys'. The teams were evenly matched and the score seesawed throughout much of the game.
At full time the score was locked forcing overtime however Waitaki finished stronger and took the victory 93-85.
A night in Oamaru with some ten-pin bowling and then it was off to Dunedin early for a match with King's at the Edgar Centre ice box..
With an impressive team performance the team comfortably defeated Kings 85-54 with defensive intensity once again a highlight.
The perennial powerhouse of southern school hoops, Otago Boys' High was the challenge for the second game of the day and the intensity and tension was high throughout the match with the lead changing several times. Down the stretch, learning valuable lessons from previous experiences, the side executed well and closed out a narrow victory 86-84.
The final day saw a match-up against John McGlashan College and the final game in St Bede’s colours for Year 13 students Harvey O’Neill, Harrison Earl and Angus Stewart.
Once again an impressive team performance delivered a comfortable victory 85-68 with the entire lineup getting extended minutes.
A special moment for Harvey, Harrison and Angus who subbed out with 35 seconds remaining and received a resounding from their team and supporters. Go well lads, you have been wonderful ambassadors for basketball at St Bede’s, on and off the court.
Huge thank you to Mr Ven for his hard work and time to arrange the matches along with the countless hours he puts in as Head Coach and Teacher in Charge during the season. Many of these are unseen to most as he plans, strategises and analyses the finer elements of the game to drive success for the players and team.
Sincere gratitude to the contribution of assistant coach Kelvin Fisher and manager Tania Walls who have ensured that the communication and off court management have been exemplary, allowing the team to focus on success on the court.
Special mention to Scott Rait who has been the official photographer for the senior team this season and captured some outstanding shots during the season and most recently during the recent Southern trip. Thanks Scott, we really appreciate your work.
The basketball club would like to acknowledge and congratulate our chairperson Kelvin Fisher on being named Administrator of the Year for the Canterbury Basketball Association. A wonderful way to be recognised for the hours of effort which goes in for the benefit of basketball for the boys at St Bede’s.
As we draw the curtain on the regular season the club would like to sincerely thank it's sponsors for their amazing generosity and contribution to the club and its success during 2021. Without your support the boys would not enjoy the many benefits they receive from the sport and collectively we are very grateful for your role within the club.
