Mr John McPhail —

Canterbury Championships

On Thursday the 15 of August the Ski and Snowboard team competed in the Canterbury Champs at Mt Hutt. The competition was a Giant Slalom event with the competitors completing two runs down the course. The boys skied and snowboarded really well and we managed to get some very pleasing results.

In the ski event we managed to get three boys in the top twenty for the first time with Willem Wylaars (15th), Louis Wylaars (16th) and Luke Higinbottom (20th). Ed O’Brien also skied very well but unfortunately crashed on his second run but was on track to be placed in the top ten based on his time in the first run. These results meant the A team of Willem Wylaars, Louis Wylaars, Luke Higinbottom and Max Gillies were placed 3rd overall.

In the Snowboard event Andy Dalkie finished 3rd individually. This was an excellent result and was the first time we had a student placed in the top three in the individual results. Giorgio Haendle placed 11th and Jonty Dodd 14th which meant the snowboard team finished 3rd overall as well.

The next event on the calendar is the South Island Champs in Wanaka in mid September. On Thursday the 5 September the team is doing a quiz fundraiser at Elmwood Tavern. Tickets are $20 per person or $120 for a table. Please contact Mr McPhail on jmcphail@stbedes.school.nz if you are keen to come along and support the boys.
