CRICKET

The St Bede's first 11 cricket team has started off their season well with a good win against the Willows cricket club out in Loburn claiming the Clayton Cosgrove Cup and the Durham trophy for this win. These trophies have not been held by SBC for a number of years. Highlights of this game were a top score of 89 by Matt Boyle and 4 wickets by Matt Munro.

The first of the three annual traditional matches have started with a closely fought battle against Sacred Heart, Auckland, concluding with a win to SBC, Retaining the David Bomber/Mills trophy.

This closely fought victory brought out the best of every player on the field. SBC managed to set a first innings total of 215 for Sacred Heart to chase. This total was helped along by a top score by Jackson Hemingway of 62 and Felix Bennie Steel of 48. The Sacred Heart batters took to the crease losing a few quick wickets making their run chase more difficult being kept to a total of 138. Stand out performances was from Jacob Walker on Debut taking 4 wickets and also taking three catches in the field.

SBC 2nd batting innings again proving difficult, but SBC were able to continue to put more runs on the board setting a lead of 240. Notable performances with the bat was from Felix Bennie Steel for his hard fought 30 and to Joe Bradley and Matt Munro setting a partnership of 75. This lead of 240 runs left a hard task for Scared Heart to chase down. The F.B.U struck early with the new ball with Joe Bradley taking two wickets in two balls and Jackson Hemingway motoring into the wind taking an important wicket. At lunch Sacred Heart fell to 55/5. Sacred Heart continued at the crease with the tail enders chipping away scoring slowly and thoughtfully until the last session of the day where there was a break through, from excellent fielding by Jackson Hemingway, Luke Gill and James McSweeny all helping to get two very important runouts.

This being another successful sports exchange with a brother school, creating friendships and comradery through a competitive game of three day cricket.
