Sports Update

Mrs Clare Kissick —

All Football and Rugby is cancelled for this weekend with the exception of the 1st XV and Under 13 Rugby.  All St Bede's College's Grounds are closed.

Athletics

South Island Championships

With the disappointment behind us of Canterbury Athletic Championships being cancelled for most competitors, a team of 24 athletes last weekend travelled to Dunedin to represent Canterbury and the College at the South Island Athletic Championships.

James Coates had our first win in the Under 15 Discus with a throw of 48.24m. This beat the existing College record of 46.45m set by my brother Charlie Gamble in 2011. James also came 3rd in the Shot Put and 5th in the 80m Hurdles.

Nick Moulai was our next winner, easily taking out the U/19 3000m in a slow time for him of 8 minutes 55 seconds. The next day he raced the 1500m, leading all the way to 50m to go when his only close opposition, a Wanaka triathlete, pulled out from his slipstream and sprinted to the win. Nick’s second place did beat the existing South Island record.

Our final wins were by a dominant Andres Hernandez, who lead both the 3000m and 1500m from start to finish in times close to his personal bests.

Cameron Gamble had a busy weekend, with a second in both the U/16 100m Hurdles and Relay, and thirds the Discus and Shot Put.

Rupert Naughton came second in the u/16 300m Hurdles, while individual third placings were gained by Iuvale Pulega in the U/14 80m Hurdles, Ethan Smolej in the U/14 3000m, Jared Jones-Pankhurst in the U/16 High Jump, Luke de Roo in the u/15 100m and Nicolo Fronda in the u/16 100m.

The last events of the weekend were the Relays.

Up first was the U/14 4 x 100m team of Amby Pulega, Iuvale Pulega, Ben Phillips and Cameron Mantell who gave it their all and came a fine second, only to be gutted minutes later when they were disqualified for a technical infringement at a baton change.

Our U/16 4 x 100m team of Rupert Naughton, Nicolo Fronda, Cameron Gamble and John Gerber ran a fine race at the front of the field, but in the finish had to settle for second.

The last chance for school bragging rights are the 4 x 400m relays. Our U/16 team of Luke de Roo, Zac Bates, Bradley Jervis and John Gerber gave it their all and came away with a worthy third. Overall a great weekend away.

A number of athletes have now qualified for Nationals at the end of the year in Hastings and plan a winter build up starting straight after next Tuesday’s College Cross Country Championships on the backfield.

Football

The St Bede's College Football Club has come up with a new intuitive this year and are thinking of entering a Junior 1st XI team into the School Sport Canterbury Wednesday afternoon competition.  This team is open to all St Bede's College students that play Football, either for the College or a Club.  We would like your son to register by email to Mrs Kissick in the sports office at sport@stbedes.school.nz

This team will only go ahead if the club can find the resources to run this team e.g. coaches and a manager is a must.

If there is enough interest in forming this team – trials will be held afters chool on Wednesday 12th April.

Rowing

Maadi Cup Secondary Schools Regatta.

Last week saw a squad of 24 boys compete in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing regatta held at Lake Karapiro. This sporting event is the largest in the southern hemisphere and this year had over 2300 competitors from 127 Secondary schools. This was the 70th year of this prestigious and historical event.

The rowing club has a larger number of younger rowers and the results and personal best times for a number of these crews was very encouraging. We had 2 crews that made A finals, 3 crews made B finals and 1 crew in each of the C and D finals.

  • Boys U15 coxed four placed 6th
