Racing ahead: Strong connection between St Bede's and horse racing
For more than a century, St Bede’s College has prided itself on fostering a strong sense of tradition and success across a range of fields - including the world of horse racing.
From past students who have made their mark as jockeys and trainers, to current students excelling in the sport, the college’s connection to the racetrack is undeniable. Whether riding in the saddle, working behind the scenes, or simply enjoying a day at the races, Bedeans have long been part of New Zealand’s rich racing culture.
A Legacy of Racing Success
St Bede’s has a proud history of producing talented individuals in the horse racing industry. Among our old boys are successful jockeys, esteemed trainers, and dedicated professionals working behind the scenes in the industry. Their journeys have taken them from Christchurch’s local tracks to national and international racing circuits, proving that the Bedean spirit carries far beyond the classroom.
A great example of this is current Year 10 student, Lachie Smolenski, who is set to be a rising star in the racing world, alongside old boy, Jacob Dunn (2017-2021). These young men represent the next generation of talented horsemen, showcasing the dedication and grit that define St Bede’s.
But it’s not just about those working in the industry. St Bede’s old boys also love to get involved in the fun of racing. Many enjoy heading to the races to support their mates, follow the form and, of course, take the occasional punt (responsibly, of course!). Race days have long been social occasions where Bedeans reconnect, reminisce, and cheer on horses trained or ridden by their own.
A Night at the Races – A Celebration of Tradition
This connection to horse racing makes St Bede’s Night at the Races more than just a fundraising event, it is a celebration of our history and community. Held at Addington Raceway on Friday, 4th April, this year we are bringing together old boys, parents, whānau and staff for an exciting night of racing, great food, and fantastic company. It’s the perfect way to support the college while embracing a sport that has long been intertwined with the Bedean spirit.
Whether you’re an experienced racing enthusiast, someone with industry ties, or simply looking for a fun night out, we invite you to join us for this special event.
