Mr Bill Hooper —

Department of Careers, Education and Guidance

This term has been a very busy time with university liaison visits from UC, Otago, Auckland, and Victoria to inform Year 13 students about possible educational options in the future. Lincoln University is coming to St Bede’s next term. ARA is organising drop-in sessions in the Library throughout the year.

Some Year 9 classes have been involved in career planning with relevant information and resources given to assist this future planning, this will continue over term 2.

The Gateway programme has around 28 students and over this term they have completed courses in Health and Safety in the Workplace as well as First Aid to make them ready for work experience next term.

On Friday, 9 March 20 students, with Mr Hall and Mr Freeman, attended the Careers Showcase run by the Trucking Industry. Our students were given the opportunity to look at many different employment avenues available, from working with telematic systems and GPS, to logistics roles and distribution, automotive diagnostic specialists and the real blokes stuff -truck driving. Feedback from those that attended considered it was well worthwhile and beneficial in assisting them about future pathways in this industry.

While other students have completed courses in barista training and leadership through the Learning Place run out of Bowls Papanui.

On the 27 March our senior Pasifika students attended SPACPAC Careers Expo Programme and were able to engage with Pacific Industry guest speakers from Business, Trades, Health, Engineering and Teaching.
