Water Polo

Richard Pithey —

The St Bede’s Water Polo club had new record of 54 boys sign up to play in Term 1 and put 4 teams into the pool for competition games. The red and black teams competed in a competition run at Boys' High while the Senior A and B teams competed in the weekly competitions at Jellie/QE2. The term was heavily affected by Covid but our players won the weekly competitions in all grades we were entered in. Of note was the performance of the Senior B team at the Festival of Water Polo (a replacement of the South Islands which were cancelled due to covid). The Senior B team placed third in Christchurch beating both St Andrew's A and Burnside A.

In a term where we had 10 of 13 Senior A players and both coaches go down with Covid we were very grateful to old boys Caleb Stewart and Sam Rochford for stepping in to help coach the team. Our student coaches also did a great job of coaching our Red and Black teams. This is a very special part of water polo at St Bede’s, a big thanks to Jared Talanoa, Aiden Karson, Gregor Creagh and Deagan Agnew.

The Club was extremely proud to cap two of their players during Term 1. Joshua Fraher and Conor Crosbie have been in the Senior A team since Year 10 and were delighted to finally receive their caps after delays due to covid. It was a particularly special occasion to be capped by Old Boys / Senior Head Coaches Pat and Sam O’Neil who have been coaching the boys since they were Year 6 at Christ the King and have been a big part in mentoring and guiding the boys to become the players that they are today. We would like to congratulate the boys on their achievement and wish them every success for their future within the sport.
