UC campus & halls of residence tour with Faculty visit – School Holidays

Our University of Canterbury Ilam campus tours are a great option if you are unable to join us for Rā Tōmene | Open Day.

Guided campus tours visit the library, bookshop, lecture theatres, student social and study spaces, and some of our fantastic new learning facilities. Our Tour Guides give insider knowledge of different areas of the university.

Faculty visits are an opportunity to gain better insight into the degree you are looking at studying. These visits are variable but most offer a tour through spaces you will be using for your degree and include expert advice from student advisors/current students.

A visit to the halls of residence can be added to your tour booking form. Each hall of residence takes 30 minutes to view, and you will make your own way to each at the time you have booked for. Maps will be provided to assist.

Te Rā Tūhura | Discovery Day brings Tau (Year) 12 students and teachers from the Christchurch and Canterbury region onto campus to enjoy the opportunity to explore university.

Te Rā Tūhura is your chance to embrace a fun and inspiring experience to explore UC subject choices, discover career pathways, and understand the importance of tau 12 for future opportunities.

You will get to choose your own timetable, attend short lectures, enjoy lunch with a group of new mates and explore all the opportunities at UC.

  • Take part in lectures of your choice and see how your school subjects relate to university
  • Discover the differences between school and university
  • Learn why university study is valuable
  • Explore the support services UC provides
  • Find out what’s on offer to UC students.

Let Ms Kershaw in Careers know if you’d like to attend this on-campus experience day at UC. It is a school day (Wed 8 June is in Wk 6 of T2) and so you do need to have a good attendance record and be doing well in your classes to get school approval to attend. It maybe a case of first in first served, as last year we only received a certain number of spots.

Student Volunteer Army

The first holiday break is just around the corner and we hope term one has gone well for you so far. With the omicron variant in the community, we hope you and your whānau have been able to stay safe. We also hope that you’ve found time to volunteer and support those in need – volunteers like you are so important in difficult times like these.

If you’re looking for ways to volunteer, don’t forget to check the SVA App for the new opportunities that are popping up all the time. Thank you to the amazing volunteers supporting the Sunday Blessings team in Tāmaki Makaurau, and the volunteers helping direct those at vaccine clinics in Ōtautahi.

Whatever you’re doing to volunteer, know that we appreciate the work you do. Thanks, team. We’re stoked to have you on board as an SVA Volunteer.

Thanks from all of us at the SVA Team,

Sam Johnson

Student Volunteer Week (SVW) is coming up next month! It’s a great opportunity to try new volunteering opportunities and meet new people.

SVW is a national campaign celebrating students making a change in their communities, and connecting young people with opportunities to get involved with volunteering.

 About First Foundation

First Foundation is committed to an Aotearoa New Zealand where all people can succeed, thrive and lead. We do this by strengthening the pathways, choices and opportunities that empower young people.

Our four-year programme is much more than a scholarship. Not only will you get financial help, you’ll have a dedicated mentor who’ll be there for you along the way – so even if you’re the first in your family to go to university, you’ll have support from someone who’s been there before. Plus, you’ll get experience of work to grow your skills, giving you access to the professional networks most people rely on for work opportunities.

The First Foundation programme is funded by our partners, who are businesses, trusts and personal funders who want to help deserving young people make a difference in their community.

Producing our 2021 Annual Report has given First Foundation a rare chance to pause and reflect. It's incredible to see what we accomplished last year as a result of your support.

I'm delighted to share this report with you and hope you'll enjoy reading as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

It was humbling to go back through the stories and successes of our scholars during the pandemic's second year - they're remarkable. It was just as inspiring to review all the work and support you contributed as our part of our cherished community of partners, supporters, mentors, schools, donors, funders and whānau.

An annual report is a chance to quantify our impact. It allows us to show how much our mahi matters. Our approach of 'a hand up rather than a hand out' is proving powerful in creating a future where every young Kiwi can reach their potential, regardless of their socio-economic background. Our three-pillared approach is key.

In this report, you'll see how financial assistance helps talented students break through barriers to change their futures. You'll hear our scholars and mentors explain what our pillar of mentoring has meant to them. The value of our pillar of work experience is equally apparent when you see how it's opened up choices.

The report highlights some of the innovations we've brought to the programme, which have helped us respond to Covid. These were possible because your support was steadfast despite the continuing challenges of the pandemic. It made the stories of our donors, funders and supporters particularly moving when I read them, and I’m sure you’ll notice this too.

You can visit the report online or download the pdf here.
