Mr Callum Wilson —

Year 13 History Trip

Recently Year 13 historians ventured down to Central Otago in search of gold…history. The Otago Gold Rush of the 1860’s is a significant event in the birth of our nation that is not very widely known. Based in Queenstown, the students had the opportunity to walk over old goldfields, visit the exceptional Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown, walk through the Chinese Settlement on the Arrow river and see a working stamper battery and sluicing water cannon. For each of the three days of investigation the students had access to expert commentary and knowledge from museum and gold history enthusiast volunteers. As pictured, the historians also tried their luck at gold panning gravel from the Kawarau river. There were no major finds or early retirements.
