Kelvin Fisher —

St Bede’s College travelled across town to face the highly vaunted Cashmere High side last Tuesday in the latest round of Thomson Trophy games.

Bede's started strongly and outpaced their opponents on the scoreboard during the opening period to lead 25-24 at quarter time. The high scoring opening quarter was to set the tone for the remainder of the match.

Several turnovers during the 2nd quarter allowed Cashmere to get out in transition, allowing them to surge ahead and lead 52-39 at halftime.

With some immediate action needed by St Bede's following the break, some increased defensive pressure forced turnovers and made inroads to the deficit. Despite this Cashmere continued to score freely and maintained the lead, 81-70 going into the final quarter.

An impressive final quarter from St Bede's saw them continually reduce the margin, trailing by just 3 points with just over 3 minutes to play. This was reduced to 1 point in the closing minutes, however Bede's could not secure the lead and with a long range 3 pointer from Cashmere trailed by 4 points with time fast running out. A basket during the next play reduced it to 2 points and with a missed Cashmere shot St Bede's had the final possession with just seconds left but couldn’t find the hoop and lost narrowly 104-106.

The Thomson Trophy takes a break next week with a home game scheduled for Tuesday 14 June against Middleton Grange.

Match reports Saturday 28 May

U17 Red

The St Bede's U17 Red team faced Christchurch Boys' High School last Saturday at home. As we have seen in the last couple of games the boys had a slow start with both teams very even during the 1st quarter. Some good boxing out, but there was a lack of urgency with the boys just going through the motions.

The 2nd quarter saw the pace of the game pick up with the home team starting to impose their game and little response from the opposition.

The boys dominated the second half of the game scoring 49 points vs 29 scored by Christchurch Boys' High. The game ended with a sound victory to St Bede's (99 - 69).

U17 Black

What a difference a week and a full squad can make! This week the St Bede’s U17 black team played St Andrew's Blue. By far and away this was the most consistent performance of the season for St Bede’s, and this resulted in a game that could have gone either way. The scoring by both teams in the first quarter was slow and St Andrew’s ended the quarter with a narrow 5-point lead. Both teams started the second quarter with both teams trading baskets, and this allowed St Andrew’s to head into half time with the same 5-point lead.

St Bede’s managed to eat into the 5-point deficit during the third quarter with solid performances from Max MacLeod, Connor Stewart and Caleb Ruawhare. Along with these three players, those that came off the bench also contributed to the game. This allowed St Bede’s to finish the quarter leading 57-45. This meant that the 4th quarter would be an exciting tense battle until the final whistle. Connor Stewart had to leave at the end of the third quarter which meant that St Bede's had lost one of its top point scorers. However, the remaining players managed to hold on to a 10-point lead with 2 minutes to go. The final 2 minutes of the game time were very tense with St Andrew’s managing to cut the deficit, but it was not enough to take the game. St Bede's won with probably their most consistent performance of the year. Well done boys.

U17 White

SBC U17 White vs NCBA U17 - Everything was left on the court today especially in the 4th quarter when we fought back - outstanding effort by everyone tino rawe. Thanks Kees for filling in again great support. Coach Megan Martin – boom, so the final score saw us sadly take the loss 69/70 but what a game

U15 Red

SBC U15 Red vs Rangiora - with 2 minutes to the first whistle the rugby Lada arrives with dirty knees & our injured players assisted with bench - with 6 on the bench and 2 teams on the bench for Rangiora we knew this was going to hurt but the 6 lads played with strength, power and heart - super proud of them all ka pai lads. Rangiora took the win 100/70 but we did so well that was a jolly fabulous 70. Rest well lads you deserve it

U15 Black

St Bede's U15 Black took on one of their biggest challenges to date and faced a Riccarton High team stacked with Year 10s who have regularly put 80-100 points on opposing teams.

The boys did themselves proud by holding them to 66 points, unfortunately they couldn’t pip them at the post and came up just short losing 66-63.

The good news is the boys are starting to look better and better each week and although injuries have been a problem, the return of Logan Walls was a welcome sight as when he’s fully healthy he will add another weapon to their arsenal.

U15 White

U15 White took another very strong win 85-50, even with only 5 players.

U15 Bedeans, with 5 out of our 11 away with sickness the remaining 6 went out with determination, and heart against a full Pioneer team. Despite a loss, our best score this round, 57-88, was a fantastic game to watch. Love your mahi boys.
