1st XV won 44-22  vs Roncalli Aoraki Combined Schools

Solid day in the office for the boys and we are now well placed to tackle 2 tough games coming up. Even though we achieved the 5 points in the first half, Aoraki tested the team in the middle of the game and never gave up.

A strong scrum lead up front we managed to find some gaps up the middle with some great and strong runs from our loose forwards (Again) and outside backs.

All credit to Aoraki, they tested our defence, scored some easy points on the back of Bede’s giving away a lot soft penalties and not achieving our goal of leaving the ball alone at the tackle.

Still we left a lot of points on the table and the score did not reflect the 8 tries we scored by missing a number of conversions.

Congratulations to Jack Ryan who received his cap and again worked tirelessly in the pack and around the field. He has been the glue in the engine room this season and with Keith Grant leading/showing the passion and energy for the jersey today allowed the team to score some good tries.

Focus is now on St Thomas’s which should be a really exciting match.

2nd XV won 25-17 vs Christ's College 2nd XV

Facing Christ’s in the first game of the 2nd Round and under the captaincy of Harrison Bruhns-Croy, he looked to be the first to score following a great run from the 22 where he beat two tacklers only to be tripped just before the line. Although not held and his ability to reach out allowed him to ground the ball, a penalty was awarded instead. He was not happy about it, but to his credit, got on with his job.

The opening try 14 min into play came from solid work from our carriers to make territory, from 8m out Charlie Stenberg received the ball and with a dummy pass created the gap to zip in behind the posts setting up the easy conversion for Matt Boyle.

Christ’s responded at the 20 min mark with a unconverted try following a fantastic run initiated from 70m out, running just inside the touch line their player chipped the ball from the half to recover it inside the 22, with one man to beat he recovered the ball and crashed over the line as the chasers caught up with him. The conversion was unsuccessful.

With the scores tight and the half drawing to a close, we looked to extend our lead with two penalty kick opportunities, with Matt’s accuracy with the boot we went into the halftime break leading 13-5.

The second half saw us playing multiple phases in Christ’s 22, the breakthrough for the try came when Charlie Stenberg, receiving the ball from Lorenzo, flicked it outwards with a tap, setting up Sam Turner on the wing to run in unopposed.

Christ’s maintained the chase and scored again in the corner, the inability to convert helped to maintain our lead, but it was clear they were going to play to the end.

With 14 min to go a penalty was awarded to us one a metre from Christ’s line and a quick tap and dive saw Sam Rochford secure the try. With Matt Boyle’s conversion we lead 25-10.

Christ’s were to score again at the end of the game but the work had been done and we remain our record of 6-0 this year.

Player of the day went to Ben Shipley for his hard work and consistency.

Thanks to the support of the 1st XV who were able to come and watch our game this week, a rare privilege.

3rd XV won 30-12 vs CBHS 4th XV

This was a classic game of two halves with our team playing well below par for the first half. With the wind at our backs on a sunny day against a team we had previously beaten the team should have been able to continue the form from last week but a very lacklustre performance saw the team defending most of the half. A good break out and an individual try saw us lead 10- 7 at the break. After the half time break and with a couple of small changes to the team the game changed and we were able to gain dominance across the park. Although we did show some lapses in decision making generally the game flowed in our favour. Against a mounting penalty count our counter attack and defence were able to break the CBHS team and we able to keep the score board ticking over. A brilliant counter attack display by Caleb Hazeldine lead to several tries and this was the lift the team needed to change the fist half performance.

U16A won 50-0 vs CBHS U16A

The young men played CBHS U16A today out the back of St Bede’s. The team faced a lot of injury problems this week and we managed to get 17 fit players to start the game . The team would like to thank the efforts of Josh McDonald aka Macca for playing today for us after playing early against St Thomas’s . He fitted in well to the team and even picked up a meat pie(try) for his efforts , big ups and thanks Macca. The team took a while to get into rhythm against CBHS who were rushing in defence to try and stop our continual attack from any part of the field. The team was rewarded with some great tries that came off the back of the defence and pride in the line that the team has . With some better patience, special awareness and ball maintenance in the second halve we once again put the opposite under constant pressure and ran in some excellent tries . The great connection that the team has, shows in our very connected defence line that as previously mentioned creates the backbone to this team and allows all players the opportunity to express the skills and abilities they have . Natural abilities are just skills that come more naturally to some but that can be learned by others . So we need to go back to training this week challenge our selves to be better and become addicted to be constant and never ending our self improvement . A big thank you to our manager Lejorben for her efforts on Friday at photos where we had our ‘rugby photo in our rugby uniform’ ,thank you and the team appreciates all your efforts that you put into our team each week . Well done men I’m looking forward to our future and feeling grateful for our efforts in the past . Catch you Tuesday Naps

U16B lost 31-40 vs Hornby U16B

St. Bedes came out the gate swinging and scored twice within the first ten minutes. After a hard fought defensive effort we conceded a try but responded immediately with a spectacular chip and chase by Todd McDermott to set up a try on the outside. Eventually some difficult refereeing calls and a lack of discipline allowed Hornby to gain momentum and draw at halftime. After halftime missed tackles and inconsistent ruck-side defence led to multiple scores by the opposition. With ten minutes left and down by a considerable amount Bede's made a valiant comeback but ran out of time thus ending in a heart crushing 40-31 loss.

U15A lost 25-31 vs STC U15 "Blue"

U15A had a tough battle against St Thomas. With the boys coming from a loss the week before, we wanted to go into this game prepared and we wanted a win. The first half was pretty tough for us and we were playing their game instead of our own. The first half had ended and the score was 21-3 to the St Thomas side. Kick off had gone underway for the second half and the boys flicked the switch and played a different game. With storming runs from Revel Mumuta and Riley Lucas, we were down in there 22m for a long time and a deserved try came our way. With a quick reset we were punching through the line and scored another try.

The pressure was on as we were down a couple of tries, but our heads were held high and we were finally playing our game. Another try was scored by Darryl Harris and we were only down by 2 points. We had won a penalty right in front of the posts and our star kicker Jamayne Feast stepped up and kicked the goal. We were up by one point and we were feeling good. It was the final play but unfortunately we lost the ball. That means we were on defence for the last couple of seconds. With a chip n chase and a regather, the St Thomas side had stolen the game and won it. The boys were devastated as we played it till the final whistle. As the captain I was very proud of where the boys came from and how we stuck till the end. Thank you for all the support and love on the sideline.

U15B won 62-0 vs Shirley BHS U15C

Structure and discipline were features of an impressive performance by St Bedes U15B in beating Shirley 62 points to nil on Saturday. Three tries came in the first 10 minutes with Tauvale Thomas Aupa’au cutting through from a pass by Gem Inkster who scored on his own account moments later running in off a pass by Sam McAfee. Inkster featured again with a powerful fend in a break out from a maul drawing in the defenders before offloading onto Lorenzo Fasi who drove into the corner for first of his two tries. Shirley was on the back foot and scrambling to defend their line. The St Bedes backline joined the action with Blake Scott and Jimmy Hastings driving through the opposition to add their tries to the final tally. Inkster scored again at the close of the half for St Bedes to lead 36-nil. Wil Pattinson was an important link making good ground converting four of the tries while Lachlan Baird added a try and a conversion. Reo Maeda on the wing featured with strong and controlled bursts and good defence. Dong Shin who has been steadily working his way into the team crossed the line and was disappointed when the referee ruled a no try.  The forward pack was impressive particularly in the first half controlling the close contact where William McIntyre featured supported by Isaac Hurring and Josh Ashdowne. Back from injury loose forward Jack Ward settled into the work quickly and boosted the defence.
Shirley rallied mid-way through the second half pinning St Bedes on their own line and just missed scoring. St Bedes U15B has been steadily building skills and team work and looks to be a real prospect in the games ahead.

U63kgs "Red" lost 19-34 vs Christ's College U63kgs

Another tuff day at the office for the under 63 kg red team. Once again little mistakes cost us dearly. The Christ’s College team had called is some recruits from the under 14wide who had a bye, and those players clearly made a difference (one who happened to be my nephew scored 4 tries). That is not an excuse, we still could have won the game but we continued to either relax at wrong time or loose focus when we desperately needed it. A classic example was we won a penalty when defending our line on half time, and instead of tapping it and kicking it out, we kicked for touch, and didn’t kick the ball out, which resulted in College scoring and us ending up with someone in the sin bin. Little mistake, costly outcome. Although frustrating at the time, ultimately, hopefully, the boys learnt a lesson that they won’t forget about game management. We ended up losing 34 to 19. Once again we showed great fight right till the end of the game, but unfortunately we weren’t good enough to get the victory. Player of the Day went to Dylan Butler for some hard straight running and his usual hard tackling.

U63kgs "Black" won 26-19 vs StAC U63kgs "Blue"

Almost too exhausted to write as the game was an epic see saw match against at Stacked STAC team this week. Everyone now wants to topple the St Bedes team, and today our boys turned into young men. STAC made life difficult for our boys with great counter rucking. Missing our forwards coach Sam Lawry the boys had to find an extra gear to compete. Our backs saved the day with strong runs by all the backs, and managed to get us over the advantage line and in their half. POD was chosen by our concussed sideline player Seth who felt that Neil Kamat earned the mighty jesters hat for the week.

U14A won 39-27 vs SBHS U14A

A good win for the U14s today beating Shirley 43-27. The boys implemented many of the things they have worked on at practice and several times we saw seven, eight, nine or ten phases of play leading to tries. Some really good discipline saw a small penalty count this week. Out line out and scrum worked well and there was some slick backline passing. The team work was evident on the field although a stand out player this week was Vili Fifita who worked hard all game and played a blinder.

U14B lost 17-32 vs Hillmorton U14B

The SBC u14 Stags played Hillmorton High School on SBC no 2. The Stags started well with an early try but then dropped their intensity. HHS came back with their big ball runners and scored 3 tries. The stags scored another try just before half time to close the gap.
SBC dominated the second half, camping in the HHS 22, scored 1 try, and crucially had 2 tries disallowed.
However HHS scored a try against the run of play and another close to full time to make the final score 32 to 17 to HHS. The best of the Stags forwards were Matthew Brown, Hugo Tresfield and the tireless Sol Spanton. In the backs Harry Gorman was very strong on defence, Logan Hammond snappy with the pass and run, and pod Kelby Smith scored a good try and ran elusively.
Credit and thanks to Wiremu Day Jones, Joshua Bain, Bradley Slemint and Daniel Kim for helping to look after the BBQ during the 1st XV game, great effort lads!

U58kgs "Red" won 62-15 vs StAC U58kgs

U58kgs "Black" lost 19-23 vs CBHS "Black"

Important game against Boys' high with it being our first match in the reset competition but also with the added excitement of a shield match. After a slow start by us, accompanied CBHS taking advantage of their opportunities we quickly found ourselves down 15-0. Knowing we needed to score next the boys didn't let this bog them down, managing to score next putting us right back in the match. A couple more well worked tries by us and a penalty and try by them put us down 23-19 with a few minutes left. Unfortunately we weren't able to repeat beating this team on the final play of the game again. Overall a tough loss but definitely a glimpse of what the rest of the year is going to be like physicality wise and a game that we can learn from going forward.

Venerables

Welcome back to another year with St Bede's Rugby. For those of you that don’t know, or are new to the club, we have an internal Supporters Club called “The Venerables”. The Venerables provide some key attributes to the overall St Bedes Rugby experience. Primarily The Venerables are the conduit for social activities and fund raising. We have an annual Golf Event and provide regular opportunities to meet socially.

This year we will be having the next Venerables event before and after the following home game:  22/8/20 Vs CBHS

This will involve a few beers and food before the game, along with a short visit from one of the coaches for a quick chat.

During the year, all members will receive a message prior to the 1st XV game describing the opposition and all of the info required for attending games. This will be augmented with score updates as the match progresses.

We are also lucky enough to have a substantial liquid sponsorship from the Elmwood Trading Company. We will be meeting at The Elmwood after all Christchurch games from around 4.30pm.

Under normal circumstances we would be seeking a membership fees of $50 but this year we recognise that things are not normal and as such, the payment is voluntary. Should you wish to make a donation to the Venerables, the account is as follows: 03-0855-0333935-002. Please include your name. All paid members will be receiving a monogrammed scarf and the money will be going towards a rugby exercise that will be beneficial for every player in the club. The money from last years membership is going towards specialist instruction from Mike Cron and John Haggart. All teams will be available to access this instruction. Please note that the Venerable Beanies and Scarves are also available to buy at $20.00 apiece.

The key thing is that everyone is welcome and ultimately the boys will benefit from us having a good time.
