IRP boys score skills and global friendships

Mark Ealey —

After three years on hold during the pandemic, the International Rugby Programme (IRP) started up again this year.

About 20 students from Japan, Argentina, Romania and Italy have participated in rugby at St Bede’s while attending IRP English classes, as well as specific training sessions such as skill work, weight-training, speed and agility, and video analysis.

This week, the 23-week IRP reaches its halfway point, so several half-programme students will make their way home.

The IRP offers a challenging experience for young people to push themselves out of their comfort zones to achieve significant growth in a relatively short time.

Patrick Pisaroglu, from Romania, looks back on his time with us, saying: “My experience in the IRP has been amazing. I have become friends with a lot of people from all over the world and I feel like the IRP was the best thing that could happen for my rugby career. I am very thankful for this experience.”

Daiki Watanabe says: “I really think I’ve grown as a person during my time in the IRP. It’s been a great experience both in terms of my rugby and my understanding of society. It’s given me confidence.”

Takuto Itano says: “I’ve met lots of really good people thanks to my time in the IRP. I am extremely grateful to my school, my coaches and my parents for giving me the opportunity to have such a unique experience.”

Saku Terao says: “Being able to use English every day has made me feel that my English ability has really improved. Using English on the rugby field has further allowed me to deepen my bonds with those around me.”

The cooperation of team coaches, managers and college staff is greatly appreciated by the IRP management.
