Water Polo

St Bede’s entered two teams in the South Island Secondary Schools Water Polo Champs held in Christchurch from 25-28 March. We entered a Senior A and Senior B team both competing in the Senior A grade. Our Senior B team had good victories against Boys High B and Shirley Boys B and gave some A teams a close game placing 10th overall. Our Senior A team was undefeated in the pool rounds and beat Boys’ High A in the semis 15-6 and then St Andrew’s A in the final 8-7.The win meant the Senior A team retained the trophy we last won in 2019 with no tournament in 2020 due to Covid-19.Congratulations to Sam Rochford who was named player of the tournament. The Senior A team will continue to train for the Secondary Schools Nationals in Auckland from 28 April - 1 May.

Futsal

The St Bede’s Senior Futsal team travelled to Wellington to take part in the Secondary School Futsal Nationals last week. We struggled against Wellington College in a first game but made significant improvements from there. On Wednesday afternoon we played Lindisfarne College and beat them 6-3. The next morning, we played St Patrick’s College Silverstream and beat them 6-1 with hat tricks from Josh Collett and Sam Ryder. Straight after that we played a strong St Thomas’ side which we held off for a 2-2 draw. In our final game for the day we narrowly went down to Hastings’ Boys’ 4-3. Our final game for the tournament was against Middleton Grange which we drew 2-2. The team made some massive improvements over the week with the future of futsal looking positive at St Bede’s College. The team was well coached by Luke Ziswiler and managed by Mr Liam Foley.
