Sixth intake, 2008: Valentino Fernández Somaglia from Argentina and Aniol Pagès Soler from Catalonia

 “My name is Valentino Fernández Somaglia from Argentina. I’m a former rugby player who was in the International Rugby Programme at St. Bede’s College in 2008. For me this experience truly changed my perception of life, not only as a sportsman but also as a human being. During those months in Christchurch I had the opportunity to meet some awesome people with whom I shared my time and I’m still on touch with many of them. I’ve got an incredible amount of memories from New Zealand and from this marvellous Bedean institute. I will never forget my colleagues in the Rugby Programme and the Year 13 boys in the Boarding House. It’s a MUST DO experience for young men who love rugby. Unfortunately I couldn’t reach the top level in my rugby career, but this study abroad opportunity linked me to the sport I love. It marked a “before-and-after” in the way that I continued my own studies with the aim of sharing and teaching people the knowledge that I gained far away from home when I was only 17 years old. I would like to thank Mark Ealey and Rob Tappenden, the men behind this work of art called International Rugby Programme.”

「2008年にセント・ビーヅのラグビー留学プログラムに参加をさせていただきましたアルゼンチンのヴァレンティノ・ソマグリアです。この経験をしたおかげで、選手としてのラグビー観と人としての人生観が大きく変わりました。留学中にいろいろないい人たちに出会い、今でもまだに連絡をしている人も多くいます。素晴らしい思い出がたくさんあり、プログラムの仲間と現地の上級生の友人のことは一生忘れられません。ラグビーを愛する若者にとってこのプログラム留学は、絶対したほうがいい経験です。私はあいにく選手として上のレベルでプレーはできませんでしたが、この留学経験によって自分の人生ともっとも好きなスポーツをリンクすることができました。これを機に17歳で遠いニュージーランドで覚えたスポーツの良さを若者に教えるための勉強を始めました。「ラグビー留学プログラム」という素晴らしい作品の裏方で頑張っているマークさんとロブ先生に感謝の意を表したいと思います。」

“Hi, my name is Aniol and I'm from Catalonia. I have played rugby since I was 11 years old. I went to St. Bede’s College in New Zealand in 2008 in order to improve my English and my rugby skills. The International Rugby Programme is perfect for young players who want to improve they rugby in the best country in the world for rugby. You share English lessons, rugby trainings, and playing with the teams of the school, mixed with New Zealand players. Living in the school dormitory, IRP students come to know the culture of New Zealand and during the holidays you are involved in the life of families from that great small country. If your objective is improve your inter-personal skills, your rugby and your English then the IRP is a great option!”
