WATER POLO

I had the pleasure of taking 21 boys to the South Island Junior Water Polo Tournament that was held in Blenheim. What a lovely bunch of boys and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the younger ones.

The B team learnt so much during the five days away. They had a few goals scored against them but they also scored in each game with four being their highest in two games. But what they learnt in and out of the pool was invaluable to them going forward for the future.

The A team had some very tough games and tough decisions going against them, but they also learnt valuable skills.

Both teams were coached by Patrick and Sam O’Neill and managed by Mrs Lucy Sutherland and you could not of got a better team to take these boys. Patrick and Sam were excellent role models and leaders throughout the tournament and their encouragement was outstanding - I know both Patrick and Sam learnt a lot as well. The parents lead by Mrs Susan Crosbie were outstanding and very encouraging - nothing was too much trouble which is really appreciated by all parents, staff and the College.

The tournament saw all teams really improving throughout the four days.

A team results– vs Burnside won 14 to 4; vs St Bede’s B 14 to 3 win; vs Marlborough Combined 7 to 6 win; vs Burnside 7 to 9 loss; vs CBHS 5 to 3 win; vs Shirley BHS 7 to 8 loss; Semi Final - Marlborough Combined 12 to 10; Final - Burnside 10 to 12.

B team results – vs Burnside 0 to 22; vs St Bede’s A 3 to 14; vs CBHS 1 to 21; vs Shirley BHS 2 to 17; Marlborough Combined 4 to 22; vs Burnside 2 to 22; CBHS 3 to 21; 5th and 6th play off vs Marlborough Combined 4 to 27.

Both teams played eight games over four days with one day playing three games, along with duty on top of that so they were all action packed days.

On a disappointing note - if your son goes away on tournament they are expected to fulfil their school commitments the next day. It is a privilege to represent the College.

Expressions of interest for Water Polo

As Water Polo is growing in the College and it looks like we may have four teams next year I am thinking of forming a Water Polo Parent Club which would be lead by parents. At present there is a very heavy workload falling on three parents, so by forming a club we would then be able to share the load, ideas, fundraising, putting in funding grants, etc.

I would like to hold a meeting with all Water Polo parents who are interested in discussing the possibilities going forward on Wednesday 11 December at 7.00pm in the Staffroom.

SPONSORS

The Athlete’s Foot – in Riccarton and Northlands Mall, have kindly donated vouchers to the College which I will use to recognise the coaches and managers in the College that are all volunteers for sports teams.

A huge thank you to Athlete’s Foot – please keep supporting both their stores as every time you buy shoes for your family members they generously donate $15.00 per pair to the College. By supporting both stores we can also buy sports gear to help with your son’s sport.
