Rowing

Kerry Sullivan —

Coaches Dale Maher, Quentin Monaghan and Thomas Flavill could not have asked for more from the squad of 22, with 18 returning with Maadi Cup Gold medals.

Last Friday we were pleased to be able to share the success of the U18 Novice Coxed Eight winning their final and picking up Gold at the Maadi Cup Regatta. We were quietly confident that our crews racing on Saturday were also capable of medal winning performances, and they delivered picking up a bronze then two gold medals.

First up in the final day of racing was James Walsh in the U18 Single Sculls, securing a 5th place in the C Final. This was then followed by our two crews in the A Final of the U18 Novice Coxed Four. Sam Earl, Sean Millar, Finn Brook, Layton Carr + Max Walsh securing 3rd and the other crew of Harrison Staples, Archie Christian, Ollie Monks, Ngakau Nixon + Liam Duff coming 5th.

The two Golds went to our U16 Coxed Eight, Josh Hamer, Sam Woodgate, Jack Dennehy-Coles, Luke Hickling, Thomas Woodgate, Matthew Glen, Neil Kamat, Luke Mc Brydie + Ollie Ellenbroek and then four members of this crew, Josh Hamer, Matthew Glen, Thomas Woodgate, Luke Hickling, and with Max Walsh joining them as cox went on to win the U15 Coxed Four around 80 minutes later.

The South Island and North Island Secondary School Regattas were not held in March due to Covid Levels increasing. As a result of them not running Rowing NZ decided to award the medals and titles from these regattas to the highest performing crews from each Island, this meant in the case of our two crews in the U 18 Novice Four who secured a Maadi 3rd and 5th, they picked up SISS Gold and Bronze as the 1st and 3rd fastest South Island Crews.

Although the Maadi Cup Regatta wraps up our 2020/21 season we will start a winter programme in Term 2, focusing on fitness that will complement winter sports, new rowers are welcome to join this if they are interested in rowing.
