At this event, you will:

  • Discover more about the specialisations available
  • Explore subject options and pathways through the courses
  • Hear about possible career pathways
  • Ask our friendly team of advisors, staff and students any pressing questions

At UC, you can mix and match a BA with subjects from Science, Business and other areas like Sports Coaching, and Youth and Community Leadership.

Even if you are not planning to do a BA, you are welcome to attend the UC Possibilities online sessions to find out about something (such as psychology or philosophy) that you might want to select as an elective in another degree.

What are the differences between Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Software Engineering?

If you’re thinking about university study and a career in computing, it can be hard to know what the different terminology actually means when deciding on a qualification and what courses to take.

Below is a very brief outline of the key differences between 3 computing areas:

  • Computer Engineering (CE)
    • Designing, developing, and operating computer systems (hardware and processors).
    • Concentrates on digital hardware devices and computers, and the software that controls them.
    • In contrast to CS and SE, Computer Engineering emphasises solving problems in digital hardware and at the hardware-software interface.
  • Computer Science (CS)
    • Understanding, designing, and developing programmes and computers.
    • Concentrates on data, data transformation, algorithms and specialised programming techniques.
    • Less structured than Computer or Software Engineering, giving students more flexibility to build depth or breadth in a variety of application domains or in the fundamentals of Computer Science.
  • Software Engineering (SE)
    • Building and maintaining software systems.
    • Greater emphasis on large software applications than Computer Engineering.
    • More applied than Computer Science, placing greater emphasis on the entire software development process, from idea to final product.
    • Also more disciplined than Computer Science, applying more systematic practices to help ensure that products are reliable and safe.

Film’s digital screen revolution: virtual production

Green screen technology opened a vast array of possibilities for visual effects in the film industry, but now there’s a new kid in town – virtual production.

Programme Director of the University of Canterbury’s Digital Screen Campus, Professor Andy Phelps caught up with Radio New Zealand podcast ‘The Detail’ to discuss the near endless opportunities made possible by virtual screen production, film’s digital screen revolution.

Here in New Zealand, the University of Canterbury has announced it is spending $97 million on a new digital screen campus that will be built on 14 hectares of its own redeveloped land. UC will welcome the first students to its Digital Screen Campus in 2023.
