Vaka provides inspiration for picnic table

Jim Harris —

MTC senior students have, over the past two years, been developing ideas toward the revitalisation of the Momorangi Reserve Park under the guidance of Christchurch City Council urban planning designers.

This mahi is now coming to fruition through persistent effort and a patient design process.

In 2025, Sione Nuku undertook a research process looking at traditional migration Vaka sail craft. With this in mind, he has designed a picnic table for the reserve to be used by the community.

It incorporates complex steel components manufactured with our robot plasma cutter as well as outsourced steel fabrication processes beyond our workshop’s capabilities.

Recently, we presented to the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board who are excited for this design and the potential to develop upcoming local renewal projects.

We are grateful for these real-world opportunities for St Bede’s College students and especially for the chance to give back to the Momorangi Crescent community.
