1st XV defeats St Peter's

Peter Watt / Brian Dunne Challenge Cup

The inaugural Peter Watt / Brian Dunne Challenge Cup lived up to expectation. It is hoped that this signals the beginning of great relationship between the two schools.

On a fine Christchurch winter’s day in front of the whole school St Bede’s came from behind to beat the defending National Champions.

St Bede’s had started well but at times, key mistakes had allowed St Peter’s to take the lead 10-0. St Bede’s struck back on half time with a well taken try by Logan Roberts. The half time team talk had the desired effect and St Bede’s attacked early but were unable the equal the scores. Both teams defended well but as the half wore on St Bede’s started to get slightly on top. With 10 minutes to go, Justin Evans scored after the Bede’s pack had hammered away at the St Peter’s line. Despite having an average day with the boot, Justin converted from wide out 12-10. With time running out St Bede’s were hard on attack and narrowly missed out on extending the score. The final moments were hard on the St Bede’s supporters as St Peter’s counter-attacked and the last play of the game was a missed drop kick from St Peter’s.

A fitting end to an exciting and close game.
