St Bede’s College Sports Enhancement Programme

Mr Jason Merrett —

In 2018 St Bede’s College is offering a Sports Enhancement programme to all students who wish to improve their sporting performance in any code.

St Bede’s College Sports Enhancement Programme

This is open to any student at the College. There are two sections of this programme as outlined below. There are three groups split into year 9, 10 and senior students.

A link to the application form can be found below.

Please indicate which programmes you are interested in. The forms are to be completed/returned to the Centre of Enhancement office by Wednesday, 14 February.

The cost for the Sports Enhancement Programme is $10 a week.

Sports Enhancement Programme

The Sports Enhancement Programme involves one practical session a week and 4 seminars per term. The practical sessions will include skill work, functional movement, speed training, fitness and flexibility. These sessions will be run by Mike Davis on Monday and Wednesday mornings before school. Mike has a Bachelor in Sport Coaching, is a qualified Strength and Conditioning coach and runs his own Athlete Development company. On top of this, he has played ITM Cup rugby for Northland and Canterbury and has played Touch and Sevens for New Zealand.

The seminars will have an underlying focus on improving mental skills. This is an increasingly important aspect of not just sport, but every day life. At St Bede’s College we see a huge opportunity to further develop our students in this area. On top of this, the seminars will also cover topics such as goal setting, nutrition, leadership, social media use, the importance of a career outside of sport and the demands of a professional athlete. These seminars will be four times a term and will be run by various professionals in each field.

Sports Mentoring Programme

The Sports Mentoring Programme will consist of a maximum of five students per year group who have gained representative honours in their chosen sport. Students will need to complete the attached application form, provide two references and partake in an interview before being selected. There is no cost associated with this programme.

The programme involves designing an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for each student in consultation with parents/caregivers, Mr Merrett and the student themselves. This is to help with managing the students workload at school and to ensure we are doing everything we can to help the student reach their goals. They will also be provided with professional training for their sport where it can be arranged.

Students in the Sports Mentoring Programme will spend one afternoon per month being exposed to professional sporting environments or attending workshops that will develop their potential to become a professional athlete. The first afternoon session is at the Crusaders facility where the boys will be shown around and spoken to about the demands of being a professional athlete.

If students are selected in this programme they are expected to fully commit and attend every session.
