1st XV vs St. Thomas's College lost 19-31

The pundits predicted that St Thomas’ were going to be strong this year. They narrowly missed out on a semi-final position last year and had many players returning for the current season. The game was hard fought and not pretty. STC dominated both possession and territory throughout the first half and they led 14-7 at half time. Although their big ball carriers continued to make inroads, our team worked their way back into the game. The final try count was 3-4 in favour of STC.

Under the 1st XV MVP system, in 3rd was Josh Borcoskie. 2nd was Christian Ioane and the player of the day was Tanner Stowers-Smith.

The team travels to Blenheim next week to play Marlborough Boys’ College

Tries: Tanner Stowers-Smith, Andre Sula, Suliasi Faiva. Conversions: Jamayne Feast 2.

2nd XV vs Christchurch BHS 3rd XV lost 14-37

The 2nd XV squad played an exhibition match against CBHS 3rd XV yesterday. This team is likely to be one of our strongest opponents this season, therefore it was great to be able to see our players tested against such an opposition. The team started well scoring two converted tries and looking determined and dominant. CBHS did score before halftime to make it 14-7 at the break. The second half was not as attractive. The team lost momentum and shape. Disciple in the ruck become an overwhelming issue which saw penalty after penalty destroy any chance to build pressure. Ultimately, due to a lack of possession CBHS ran in three unanswered tries in the second half. A disappointing finish to a promising game. The squad will be refined down further this week and is intended to be finalized after the final grading game next week.

3rd XV vs StAC U18 Blue & CBHS 7ths

SBC 3rds played two half games yesterday. In an even and hard fought encounter SBC showed great improvement from their warm up game the previous week vs college. The forwards were much more cohesive as a unit and the backs passed accurately and with purpose.
The game flowed evenly with StAC scoring first. Bede's then scored from an excellent lineout drive to even the score up. A couple of well taken tries in the second quarter to StAC meant that the final game score was 17 to 5 to StAC. That final score was not a reflection of the evenness of the game.vs CBHS 7ths:The lads enjoyed the opportunity to express themselves vs boys high. Initially they had to repel several onslaughts from their big ball runners and tackled bravely. The Bede's forwards got into their work with good lineouts and ruck turnovers. Then our backs started getting some good front foot ball and scored some excellent tries. They found good space out wide and passed well to the players in support. It was a great way to round out the day for our lads who showed significant improvement will take a lot of confidence from the game. Of note was 3 tries to Kazuki Yoshida vs CBHS.

4th XV vs Christ's College 3rd XV and Burnside U18 lost both 0-19

Grading Games v Christs 3rd XV and Burnside u18 A half game against each opponent saw the Fourths lose both by the same margin -19-0. Having only come together on the previous Thursday it was understandable the boys were pretty rusty in their first outing. To their credit, they fought hard and started to show in the second game against Burnside some pleasing attacking plays. With some solid training sessions and combinations starting to emerge we know that we can only but improve. Match fitness is another area that will improve with a couple of more games under our belt. The attitude was good and we will look to build on the positives as the season progresses.

U75kgs Derby (Red vs Black) Won by Red 32-14

U15 Red vs Christ's College U15 lost 5-14

1st half vs College; College started strong and we’re physical with and without the ball which caught SBC off guard in the first 10mins. However, the lads worked their way back into the competition and scored a nice try which gave the team some momentum. Some basic errors such as passes behind the player, half tackles and knock ons stopped the flow of SBC’s attack but this is to be expected early in the season. There are some exciting players who stuck their hand up at various times and no doubt these two teams will have some great battles this year.

vs Shirley The new tackle rules effected this half of rugby from ever getting a roll on for both sides. It was a very closely fought 35mins with Shirley holding on to win 7-5 through some gritty defence and some great support from their sideline. SBC. Scored a very well worked try where they went through 3-4 phases exactly as they had trained during the week which was pleasing to see. This is a big area for the team to focus on in terms of understanding how to create space, so a great example of what can happen when achieved for the team to reflect on.

U15 Black vs StAC & CBHS

On Saturday the u15 black team had their first hit out of the season. We played St Andrew's in the first half and took a tough loss against a very sharp and well drilled St. Andrew's team. The second half we played another half game against CBHS which was another good side and we unfortunately had another loss. However we improved a lot from our earlier half and overall there was lots of good things to come out of the games. Some good things to come from the game was our attack, when we had the ball and strung some phases together the boys started to look promising. It was also very good to see the team not give up and they stayed in the game till the end. The boys are starting to gel well which is good to see and we are looking forward to seeing them grow throughout the season.

U14 Davidson

First game vs St Andrew’s U14 Open. 54-5 loss. Tough first game but the score didn’t totally reflect the game as most of St Andrew’s tries came from broken play. Our team showed good spirit playing right to the end and the potential for good rugby is certainly there. Main area for improvement is ball security at the breakdown. Second game vs CBHS U14B. 5 all draw. Much more evenly matched game and the improvement was clear to see. The team responded well to the coaches' directive regarding ball security and opposition turn-overs were minimalized. Other areas of our improvement were our ball handling and positional play. Over all, very pleasing start to the season. Coach’s done well delivering clear instructions. Management to sort out hydration during game and oranges at half time.
