Annual Old Boys' Dinner: A Memorable Celebration
On Saturday, August 10, the Old Boys' Annual Dinner took place at the Addington Raceway and Events Centre, continuing this tradition, 99 years after the first dinner was held.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, making it a truly remarkable evening. The roll call showcased a fantastic representation across decades, with old boys spanning from the 1940s to the 2010s, embodying the spirit of fellowship that defines this gathering.
Our current students once again played a special role in making the evening a success. Prefects Troy Cutbush and Kelby Smith warmly welcomed guests and guided them to their tables. Heinrich Muller and Julius Mumutu provided a delightful backdrop with their guitar and vocal performances as guests arrived, while Head Boy Simon Curnow took on the role of MC for the night. Simon’s exceptional skills kept the evening flowing effortlessly, combining confidence, humour, and impressive public speaking talent.
The night featured entertaining speeches, starting with Matt Ioane (1994-1998), President of the OBA. Matt’s address was filled with good humour and heartfelt messages, and he even treated us to a few lines of our old school anthem. He was followed by Andrew Gourdie (1997-2001), former The Hub Sports Presenter, who regaled us with amusing anecdotes and a nostalgic journey through the past. Andrew also presented the OBA awards, a highlight of the evening.
We were thrilled to honour two remarkable individuals with this year’s awards. Gerard Smyth (1964-1968) received the Cultural Award for his contributions to filmmaking, and Michael Leitch (2002-2004) was recognised for his achievements in rugby. Gerard was present to accept his award in person, while Michael, currently overseas, sent his acceptance speech to be read on his behalf. You can read more about the impressive careers of both awardees in this newsletter.
All the speakers shared fond reflections of their time at St Bede’s and its significance in their lives. The evening concluded with Jon McDowall, Rector, offering an insightful overview of St Bede’s as it stands today in our modern world.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, your presence helped make the Old Boys’ Annual Dinner a night to remember. Next year we look forward to celebrating 100 years since the first Annual Dinner was held, which we hope will attract many more Bedeans to mark this milestone occasion. On that note I would like to finish this recap of the evening with words of Matt Ioane, “You have one job men, to come along and bring at least one more person with you”.
