Message from the Rector

Greetings From St Bede's College

The exchange with our fellow Marist College, St Patrick's Silverstream, and a magnificent cultural assembly were the two note worthy events of the week.  The assembly showed off the Arts and a record number of pockets for public speaking, music, drama and dance were awarded. We were entertained by a number of our musicians as well as viewing examples of high quality art and a video of the Stage Challenge performance from earlier in the term. While we are blessed to have a number of talented students in this facet of the College, namely Maui Brennan, Connor McSweeney, Oliver Davidson and Tim Maguire the point was made of the number of opportunities boys have to take part in various cultural opportunities even if they have no experience.

If you go to the variety concerts you will be amazed at the talent but also what is unearthed. I never knew that Jed Lee could play a guitar until last year when he fronted – he did so again last week, very nervous but he is a natural and he has learned something about himself by having a go.  Another was George Warren who made his debut in performing solo – his excellent performance we all enjoyed but showed to himself he can conquer any fears in other walks of life as well.  As I said the springboard to other important lessons in life.

On Wednesday at the Silverstream exchange I witnessed from one of our teams what I think showed the very best in Bede’s sports teams.  Normally the 1st XI soccer team is involved in this exchange and as recently as 6 years ago went up there and lost 11-0 – Stream generally have a good football team.  For reasons outside our control the 1st XI couldn’t go – they had an important game back here.  The U17 – 2nd XI went in their place and obviously the message didn’t get through and their 1sts still turned up to play our 2nds.  There were a couple from their team in the Phoenix Academy and when they began, the skill difference between the two teams was easy to see.  Silverstream dominated – we defended grimly – saved many shots at goal, scrapped, put up with a bit of good natured but pointed comments from their side-line – as their school watched.  Silverstream scored a couple of goals inevitably and at half-time I thought – our boys are brave, but the floodgate could open here as fatigue set in.  I went to watch the debaters – half an hour later I came out and we had not only scored a goal but they had only scored three, and that was the final score.  The score does show we lost – but in my view each and every individual in our side won.  They showed what every team in this College should exhibit, and many do much of the time.  Never give up – play for each other – scrap in the very best sense of the word – be courageous – be humble.

I share that because that team exhibited all the best qualities of what Bede’s is all about.

And finally, the annual Sacramental Mass is taking place next Friday, 24 June at 11am. You are welcome to attend.

Until next time
