Welcome to our Tongan boarders

A rugby team from Apifo’ou College in Tonga visited our school on their first trip out of Tonga, it was a memorable experience that left lasting memories for everyone. These Boys brought with them warmth and friendliness that was instantly felt by everyone they met.

One of the most amazing things about our Tongan visitors was their sense of community. They moved as a close group, supporting each other and making everyone around them feel included.

We were lucky enough to have had two of the Tongan boys staying in the boarding house with us for a week. They were called Tuka and Pita. Must I say I thought the current borders loved their music but when these two came they were dancing 24/7 and even wanted to take the speaker to dinner and breakfast.

When Tuka first arrived he gave me a fright as I went to shake his hand but he went straight in for a hug! After a day I realised I hadn't seen Tuka on his phone so I asked him where it was he said “I don't have one”. After this I let him borrow mine for the majority of the day. This ended up recurring every day. However, I felt happy that I could make a difference for him and show him the same kind of warmth he showed the rest of us boys.

When Pita showed up he confused me as the first thing I saw was a gold tooth and I couldn't help but question it. He replied with nothing so I was more confused. TuKa who knew very little English, told me Pita knew pretty much no English. Pita and I however soon made a lifelong friendship thanks to Google Translate! Both these boys left a lasting impression and 116 new photos on my phone!

I will never forget the Amazing rugby team from Apifo’ou College and it was hard to say goodbye. However, I hope to go over to Tonga next year and get a taste of how they live and see the boys again.
