Opportunity to get involved with Seaweed Restoration in Wellington!

Katrina Kerr-Bell —

There is a really exciting opportunity coming up to help and work with LoveRimuRimu and Mountains to Sea. LoveRimuRimu is a restoration project that is regenerating Wellington’s seaweed forests.

Seaweed is a very important part of our environment because when it is healthy, it can absorb more carbon dioxide than trees, improve water quality, protect our coastlines, and provide a home and food source for thousands of sea creatures!

Watch this video to see what they do!

We have the opportunity for students who are interested in helping LoveRimuRimu to get involved. This would include being told some more about the project by some of the leading representatives and aquaculturists from Mountains to Sea and LoveRimuRimu. Then we will go out to the beach one weekend to find some ideal bases for seaweed to grow on. These will be taken to the NIWA science lab and have seaweed grown on them. Once this is done, we will be able to go out and plant the rocks with new seaweed in our marine environment!

This is an ideal opportunity for people interested in marine biology, general science, or the ocean! Come see Ava Saulbrey for more information and watch out for meetings in the notices.
